Why do the female Jalopnik authors insist on writing about feminism? (Quick rant)

it seems the only writers in the world who cannot leave their political beliefs out of AUTO journalism are the female Jalopnik authors. I frequently click on Jalopnik articles written by a female staff writers (I.e. Stef shader, Kat Callahan, etc. ) and find the posts have more to do with feminism than cars. Don't believe me? Here are some really annoying examples.

Probably no one else because it's still relevant to cars. Also, Stef is the lead for Blackflag, and you happened to choose the three articles that are about auto racing, thus falling under her domain.

Sorry to tell you, bud, but even the auto industry isn't free from politics and other societal things. Nothing exists in a bubble. And if you don't like it, don't click on it. Simple.

EDIT: Also, here is a piece reporting sexist posters about Mary Barra by Orlove. Who is notably a dude. Don't cherry pick your examples, it's bad journalism.

Feminism is about as political as racism.

The car world is still pretty feminist, it's something that should be addressed. Women are the best people to address it, as are minorities the best people to address racism. It doesn't bother me.

I'm not.

Writers write about things that interest them. Travis writes about Miatas, Steff about LeMons and Raphael about.. well.. let's not talk too much about Raphael.

I don't even see these articles as feminist per se. They are about issues currently happening related to cars.

And there is always the great thing about the internet that is called choice. You can choose not to read articles that you suspect aren't related to your interest and everybody comes away happy.

Kinja'd!!! Gamecat235 > IloveToyotaCenturies
04/03/2015 at 16:49

Kinja'd!!!9

It's really quite simple. As far as the posts which I have seen on the FP (or on Stef's BlackFlag sub-site), every piece which relates to how women are perceived, or treated, has also related to either the auto industry or to motorsports. And it hasn't just been Kat and Stef, but has been something taken up by many throughout the history of the site.

Have Kat and Stef been a tad more vocal than others in the past? I would possibly expect that there is a distinct possibility. Have these topics been a mainstay in their writing for the site? Not at all. But when they surface, they are relevant, and they are related. But I doubt that they make up any sort of significant portion of their writing... However... even if they did, what is it to you? No one is forcing you, or others to read them, and you can always vote with your clicks. Jalopnik is a business, with a model, which values pageviews, ad money and feedback. Don't like something. Don't click on it.

Personally, I think that the current staff is made up very nicely of a wide range of opinions and personalities, and I love the site. But I am always open to rationally talking through subjects which seem to be of interest to the site. However, based on the reaction to this piece, I would say that at least the vocal minority (which could represent the majority, but I won't speak for them) seem to agree that this is a non-issue.

Kat gives us insight to the culture in Japan and what it's like to be a car nut living over there. Yes, they have posted some female POV posts, but guess what, they're females. They have the right and freedom to do so. If you don't like it, don't read it.

Keep in mind that racing (as with many other aspects of our culture, not just car culture) still has a number of issues where sexism is prevalent. I'd say that regardless of gender of the author, it's always worthwhile to identify and discuss those issues and how they can be dealt with. This article highlights a guy's contribution toward quelling sexism, but should you care about his gender? No. Stef and Kat are car people, and they write about things related to cars. The whole point that people are trying to make is that if someone wants to be part of car-culture or racing, the fact that they are a woman needs to bring no ill will. We as a group should strive to make everyone feel equal, embraced, and included. If Torch drew up an article where he talked about the topics within the three pieces by Stef that you cite, I doubt you'd be questioning whether he was secretly trying to further the cause of feminism, first and foremost. Stef just keeps her ear to the ground, rubber on the track, amd writes about anything racing-related that she can get her hands on. I don't usually come across as much of the content that Kat writes, but what I have has been enjoyable and a fresh perspective.

I'll close by saying that I like this whole wealth of contributors, and I hope that you do, too—the Puffalump pictures are just a bonus.
