I'm trying to get a hold of the towing capacity for my 1997 A4 2.8 Quattro and I don't have the owners manual on me.
My question to Oppo is, where can I find the towing capacity of my car when I'm not near it and the owners manual is not near it?
Rustang for your time.

do you want the american capacity or the euro capacity? The AM have different standards. Thats why you will see 1/6L TDI in europe hauling a caravan and here you 'need' a dodge ram

Google. Or maybe the driver door jamb?

That's the thing, I'm very far away from my car currently.

It's that much?
I was thinking half of that since it isn't a very powerful car.

Both would be quite interesting.
I do find it slightly funny how everybody thinks that they need a bro truck to carry around a pretty small camper, while Europeans are busy carting around massive campers and trailers with their small cars. It does seem to take quite a toll on their performance, but I guess that's just expected for towing something that heavy.

yea.
for example, our A3 TDI (in canada, so the 'big' 2.0L TDI) we were told you cant tow at all with it.
yet in euro, they regularly tow 1200kg (~2500lbs) no problem

Yeah I figured it was 1500lbs.

Yup, where did you manage to find it? I searched around pretty much everywhere for about 15 minutes.

Meh, I don't feel like going through an endless cycle of call centers to find that.
I think that E92 actually got the right one though.

Call the manufacturer, they should have it.

For regular passenger cars or SUV, it's usually 1000lbs

Part of it is the tongue weight - trailers in the UK/Europe tend to have axles further forward than most trailers in the US, so the cars are basically just pulling the weight, not supporting it. Also, they drive slower when towing heavy weights and stay off major highways, while we still expect to do 90mph on the Interstate with 10,000lbs behind us.

we are limited to 55 with trailers anyways.
but I do see the point. I havent gotten quite that far into my mech eng program. I have to admit that diagram made it step back from the computer at first

thread jack! how do you like your A3 tdi? I'm thinking of picking up a used one if my job commute goes from 6 miles to 74 miles. So fuel economy and butt/back comfort are going to be more important than the fun factor.

Fucking LOVE IT. (disclosure: its my dads, but i drive it if I want)
EPA rated it 36mpg. real world is closer to 45. LOADS of torque down low makes it feel alot quick then it actually is.
also a very fun little thing to toss around. Suspension tuning is straight from the GTI.
also, built in germany! All audis are german made, unlike the VW's which some are mexican built.
my complaints are:
no AWD. it was the ONE fucking car/motor audi didnt offer AWD in canada
erm. I would like it to be faster. ours is stock, i'm tring to get my dad to jump on a APR tune. But thats just me. (for the record, APR tune is 184 HP and 300 lb-ft torque)

Awesome. I appreciate the prompt and thorough response. Have you been in it for many longer journeys? Still comfortable after a few hours?
I knew about the GTI connection which had me worried it may be too firm. Michigan roads aren't exactly smooth.
Also, I curse almost daily about no Quattro for the TDI.

I've been in to for longer journeys. I admit the back seats arent the best . and the front start to get a little painful after 8 hours on the road (I do a 15 hour trip twice each year) But hey, its no Bentley.
GTI connection: I admit i tend to avoid bigger bumps. but thats more out of mechanical sympathy then it being uncomfortable. Ontario roads tend tend be reasonable, with a few spots as bad as Michigan. Once you start to really push the car hard and fast, it will tend to under steer just a bit. but again, its a FWD, TDI engine in the front econo car.
I will say that with the winter tires we have on it (italian brand, marangonni e-ice4) there is a surprising amount of rad noise, but thats to do more with the tires then the car.
speaking of tires: We run the OEM continentals. the car has 130,000km on it, and we JUST replaced them this year. (though, we run on winters 6 months of the year. oh canada!)
I know someone else on here switch to michilens and he says they make the car even better!
issues we have had:
we had the EGR valve get dirty/packed with soot twice (once at 60K km, once at 120k km). It didnt change summer driving in anyway, made the car a little long to warm up in the winter. First time was a warrenty thing, second time it was 300$ CAD
Build quality: yes, we have had our for 5 year now, and it honest to god feels like its brand new. The leather in the driver seat is a little softer then the passenger seat. No funny rattles, nothing. It also sits outside as we dont had room in our garage for a car (2 car drive, 1 car agares. 2 cars, 2 motorcycles and a BUNCH of bicycles. so the cars stay out). No rust as far as I can tell.
granted, we also take VERY good care of ours. in the winter, a car wash once every 2 weeks at least.

A 1997 A4 2.8 5V Quatro in Europe? 1800 kg (almost 4000 lbs), assuming the trailer has its own brakes. Note that the maximum speed is limited for towing (90 +/-10 kmh in most European countries) and that the way trailers are constructed in Europe is apparently different and less stressful for the towing vehicle.

My 2.8 is a 12v, the 1.8T is a 5v. But it's still impressive since both cars share nearly identical performance.

It is? According to my sources, which might be wrong, the 2.8 had 5 valves per cylinder as well, with 193 hp. In Europe.
jkm7680
> duurtlang
04/03/2015 at 09:07 | 0 |
Sounds like the 30v to me. The 12v has 2 valves per cylinder and 170-something horsepower and the 30v had 5 valves per cylinder and 193 horsepower.
It's all the same 2.8 engine, but the 12v was simply the older version of the 30v that was used up to about 2004 or something like that.
