When people say "RX7 concept," completely unaware that the RX8 was a thing. If anything, it would be an RX9.

You know what really grinds MY gears? New Mazda rotary sportscar "news". It's just not going to happen. A friend of mine works for Mazda corporate and they just aren't gonna do it. As much as you, me, and everyone else wants to see it, it just doesn't work with their business model and their product lineup direction.

RX-7 is a model type, not a sequence number. Just like RX3 used to be. ALL of Mazda's numbered models are different types, not sequence numbers.

RX-8 is a different type than RX-7. RX-8 was not a sequence of RX-7.

RX-8 was a 2+2 pseudo-4-door coupe, with rear half doors, it was not a 2-seat 3-door coupe or a convertible variant of it.

A new RX-7 would be a new generation of the 2-seat sports car RX-7 type classification.

An RX-9 would be a new, different type than has existed before.

Can't really say that.

I imagine a full performance front engine 2 seater would be branded an RX7, a 2+2 an RX-8, econocar based an RX-3, something different (mid-engine or sedan or something) might be an RX-9.

It's also a dumb idea. Rotary engines are stupid unreliable and have poor efficiency.

I think it really depends on what kind of car it turns out to be. The RX-8 is pretty distinct from the FD RX-7 before it. If the next rotary sports car from Mazda is more RX-7ish than RX-8ish, I wouldn't mind bringing the RX-7 nameplate back.

ehhhhhhhh. they're very susceptible to poor maintenance. if by reliable you mean "buy and never change oil and it will work anyway" then yes, it is that.

Funny enough my friend's FC was the most reliable car he'd ever had. You just have to treat them properly. But yeah turbo rotaries are no bueno.

Some say the RX-8 wasn't a direct replacement for the RX-7, since its not quite the pure sports car the 7 was, and that a new full blown sports car from Mazda would in fact be a return of the RX-7 name.

Well, RX-7 was a model name used by three completely different generations of rotary sports coupe. The RX-4 was a large sedan, RX-2 and RX-3 were small cars, and RX-5 was another name for the Cosmo, so RX-7 was always the name used for their mainstream rotary sports coupe, until they replaced it with the RX-8. When people talk about an RX-7 concept, they're talking about going back to a smaller, lighter, and cheaper car than what the RX-8 was.

Mazda never had a tradition of going up a number with each generation - otherwise the RX-8 would have been the RX-10.
