"HFV has no HFV. But somehow has 2 motorcycles" (hondasfordsvolvo)

I've always had a attraction to older Saabs, and they are getting cheap, at least the boring non-turbo models. So I'm thinking about going to look at the old Saab. Any advice/warnings? I know these cars have timing chains so I need to listen for any rattling there, but is there any other major common problems? Also I really wish this was a hatchback, and for that reason I might pass it up is I don't love it from behind the wheel.

Check for rust at the front axle portals. Primary rust spot that few check. It's a 1991 so it's likely the 2.1 NA, good motor. Auto is boring. NA so you don't have to worry about as much vaccum line fun. Really, very little to point out to check.

Thanks! I wouldn't even consider it if it was an auto.

A few things of note. Belts are a pain in the ass. Clutch is about the easiest R&R I've ever dealt with. Reverse lockout and clutch start are two things people generally defeat, so be wary of that. Cruise control is run by vacuum - if it doesn't work, it's usually a really stupidly simple fix. Seat heaters are usually an easy fix too - pressure "sensor" tends to pop. The slant four is good for a million miles or more. If the shift linkage feels sloppy, don't fret - it's normal. Expect 3rd and 5th to feel like they share space. Easy fix too.

in all honesty would you suggest an older 900 like this over, a newer GM Saab like this one?
Keeping in mind that I don't mind a bit of discomfort, and lower safety ratings that come with an older car.

Yes. The NG900 is a nice vehicle (for an Opel) but comes with a lot more potential problems. Also in my opinion the C900 is more comfortable and ergonomic :|
They also made many changes to the engine, actually reducing its reliability. Not to mention GM's beigification of the brand and the overall cheapness of parts Saab was required to use. If you're gonna buy a Saab, buy a SAAB.
Edit: Didn't notice you posted a 9-5. 9-5s are nice cars. The funny thing is that they share platform with the 900 (GM2900) yet the 9-5 uses it better. They definitely spent more cash on that model. That one is listed as an Aero, but doesn't look like one. I'd be a tad weary. If it indeed is an Aero, that's quite the NP for a 250+hp Executive sleeper. You can confirm this by ensuring the 8th digit in the VIN is a G. If not, not an Aero, and I'd skip just because of the blatant lie - you don't know what else they're lying about.

I didn't even know it didn't look like an Aero. I really don't know much about Saab in general, just that they make basically the least boring FWD cars. But a quick GIS shows that green one is missing the body work and wheels. Oh those wheels.

Yeah. Nothing in that ad says Aero. It's likely a 2.3t if it has the B235. Still not a bad car but definitely not what they're advertising.
If only EssExTee could be so grossly incandescent

I actually considered a 9000 last time I was looking for a car but I couldn't find any for sale within a reasonable distance.
