...what changed?

What I was thinking.

well, what hasn't?

Im not sure...

I think it got an extra light between the headlight and fog light.

Lights on lights on lights on lights.
Im sure they'll add an LED Fiat badge and an LED bar instead of the chrome strip in the grill for 2017.

The wheels changed and they flipped the lower grille upside down, but it's pretty much unchanged everywhere else.

Nope, that's old hat.

Damn. The fog light surrounds are more angular. You know, angles equal manly. Nearly every new car is covered in them. Mine too (mazda3).

That's what I was thinking

And upside-down from the previous look.
Angular should not be in FIAT's vocabulary. They had a good thing going on with their new-age back-to-the-50s look on the 500. I want them to expand on that.

But angles are in these days. Retro is out.
It's probably a little bigger too because no one except mazda can make a new car smaller or the same size. (I know I'm excluding the upcoming camaro and I think the mustang).

I'm actually okay with angles, because angles are still in the minority of looks. Just consider the 2015 Mustang: it is all rounded and aerodynamic and utterly boring .
Retro is also never out. Why? Because those designs are timeless, which is why they are emulated in the first place.

Retro can be overdone. When retro is poorly applied, 500L, it makes the rest look bad.

Well, overdone isn't the same as being out. It just means it was applied in a less-than-tasteful fashion.
Actually, I rather question the use of the term retro. If the same style was new today, it wouldn't be retro but it would still look good, so why call it retro instead of just timeless good looks?
