In 1968 the plane was making an prosche into San Francisco on a day with low clouds and calm seas. They were trying to shoot an ILS approach and didn't realize until too late that they were a couple of miles short of the runway. Luckily the water where the aircraft landed was only 10-12 feet deep. They picked it up with a barge and had United fix it. The cost was about $4M in 1960s money. The plane went on to fly well into thee 80s.

Wow, that's amazing that the engines didn't get torn off the wings. And it went back into sevice.
