She likes the look and MPG, I like the obsessive seller listing.

How hard are parts to source for this thing? Will it run forever? WWOD?

Will be painfully slow, but depending on the circumstances of that engine swap it very possibly *will* run forever. Rust kills these to some extent, but Lord High OCD who currently owns it has probably worked against that. Might need some suspension parts - things like the rear diff bushings or front ball joints - but likely not anything unpossible. That has the best A/C system for these, which is a non-climate control normal A/C. The ones with climate are more fiddly.
Parts are pretty easy - you can get used parts from a number of sources such as the Benz Store in Atlanta, and new parts in a fair range of places.

I would love to own one of these things at some point, is the maintenance on them bad? I know their reputation for being indestructible, but I wonder if the age starts to make them hard to maintain.

I don't know much about the W123, but if your girlfriend is looking at buying something like that, then she's definitely a keeper!

We've got three of them in the family: a '78 240D auto, a '79 240D stick, and a '85 300D auto. The '78 jumped time with all that entails and has been waiting on an engine rebuild, the '79 is offline for the moment due to manic oil consumption in one cylinder (just... not even there rings-wise), and the 300D is getting repainted. No serious all-wrecking reliability issues, but we tend to take in the infirm...
Agrajag, HarryCarry, and several other opponauts have them, as well as others in the past.
