I just spent $70 on a copy of Need For Speed Underground 2 for the Xbox. (it cost so much because it was still in it's original packaging). I read on wikipedia that NFSU2 was compatible with the Xbox 360. Full of excitement and nostalgia, I put the disc in the tray hoping it would work. It didn't. I got a message saying "original xbox games will only work with an xbox hard drive. for more info visit !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ."
I knew something like this was gonna happen. For the longest time making minimum wage caused me to forgo making purchases like this. At this point I'll just buy an Xbox Hard Drive, even though I know it will be overpriced.
In unrelated news, I just downloaded the Fixed app for my iPhone because I got a parking ticket for street cleaning last week. Even though I feel like I'm guilty it will be awesome if they can dismiss a $66 parking ticket for me. The SFMTA can suck it!

Man I would of you sold you mine for £69 and thrown in a copy of my Xbox 360 compatibility disc.

I think you're the most hardcore NFSU2 fan... in the world.

Why a sealed copy? You can get NFS U2 with all instructions and stuff for ~$7 at a store.

I have this game and it does work on 360 for the most part (so long as you have an HDD). The cutscenes don't work and are choppy as hell, but once you wait through them the rest of the game works fine.

It was an impulse purchase! Personally I'm a bigger fan of the Original Need for Speed Underground.
But NFSU2 came out when I was 11, and I'm 21 now. So I guess the game makes me feel like a kid again? idk?

Amazon is a scary place to be when you're feeling nostalgic and rich.

In lies the root of my problem. I own the last version of the xbox 360 that just has a 4GB internal flash drive. there's a slot for an HDD though.
Looking at xbox forums, the HDD is needed for backwards compatibility with the original xbox games.

Microsoft sure pissed me off with the non-compatibility of most of its earlier stuff.
What's the best racing game published for the Xbox? Rallisport Challenge 2.
Does it work on the 360? Hell no it doesn't.
I have this total bachelor pad furniture setup that I've been dragging around the country that proudly displays my big TV and manly video game systems on sheets of glass suspended from a steel spine. It's now dominated by three generations of Xboxes because backwards compatibility wtf is that?

Ah the feeling of richness, I wonder what it is like... lol
At least you can say you get the full car experience. You bought a new copy, opened it and now it has depreciated by 90%. It is just like owning a real car.
Take a look at Xbox 360 HDD prices because the average retro game store sells original Xboxes for between $45 and $60 (depending on where you are). Might be less hassle to go that route.

Yeah, I don't think I even got close to finishing NFSU2 but I loved NFSU. Played both on the PS2, still might have it lying around somewhere...
You might as well buy the hard drive, good luck!

Yep, ran into that issue myself, trying to re-play Halo 2. Keep in mind that not only do you need a hard drive to play original Xbox games, you need the Microsoft-branded one. Unless you start delving into the realms of firmware hackery, third-party drives won't work.
I ended up snagging a used Microsoft-branded drive on eBay for not a whole lot, but watch out for fakes.

I know that feeling, I always wanted to get Midtown Madness 3 for the Xbox, and since that doesn't work with the 360... it don't work.

You can buy an old fat Xbox 360's hard drive from game stop for like 20 bucks and remove the casing so you can fit it in your slim drive. Super easy way to save some money!
I did it on a friend's console in the same exact position as you and it has worked for the past couple years no problem.

That was one of those "you had to be there" moments.
Noel Gallagher said in an interview once that if you weren't there waiting for "Be Here Now," if you weren't listening to it on Day One, if you weren't part of the excitement, then... you weren't part of it.
That's kinda Midtown Madness for me. Rollicking fun on the Xbox, but quickly supplanted by every car game that came after. Fun nonetheless though.
I whipped out that game once and drove my car down to the river in Georgetown so I could show some people where I proposed to my wife. Hehe, I thought it was a better visual aid than most.

Pretty sure the HDD issue is because the 360 basically downloads an emulator from the internet to be able to run old Xbox games.
It'd be one thing if they had just one emulator to run all Xbox games, but each game has to have an emulator. That's why some games were backwards compatible and some games weren't (and why some that were had game-breaking bugs that were never fixed).
I don't think the emulators take up a ton of space but I kind of get why you'd need an HDD to ensure that space isn't an issue.

This is why I love games in realistic environments, so I can know if somewhere, or something is awesome in the video game before trying it in real life.
