...yet to be determined. Here is something to help until then. By installing a bolt on a mechanical tensioner, you can prevent the tensioner from detensioning past a chosen point. I have mine set to that the arm on the tensioner can't swing past the nominal mark. Works so far.

What we need is an italian sports car built by japan. Sexyness and reliability rolled up in one package!

Y'know, in all the nearly 400K miles I drove my 164-S It never skipped a timing tooth. Change the belt and tensioner every 30K as instructed (yes, it is a bit excessive from a modern service interval expectation, but at least it's a pretty easy job as far as timing belt replacements go.) and it's super reliable. I still rate that car as the second most reliable vehicle I ever owned. It DID skip a tooth after I sold it because the guy didn't drive it for nearly year and then rolled it backwards pulling it out of a rut while in-gear... but thats well-known no-no in the single-cam engines... he's got no one to blame but himself there.

that rant being laid down: smart idea!

Damn, 400k is impressive. Yeah, it's a very easy timing belt job. The issue is with backfiring when tuning the timing. It can easily spin backwards during that. Turning over backwards is another killer - happened to me after having the car towed.

Also, nothing that is Alfa's fault, but the supplier quality on the mechanical tensioners is pretty crappy. The thermal springs snap. This measure is also a good protection against that.

Still can't get over that 400k miles in an S though :)
