Believe it or not, living in a 2-Jalop household has its downsides. Today, we tackled the #firstworldproblems of too many keys and too many spare license plates by making a his n hers keyring holder out of a slab of oak, license plates, and brass hooks:
Step 1: Gather your supplies, tools, and hardware. We used a drill, pop rivet gun, angle grinder (don't forget your protective gear), license plates, screwdriver, brass wood screws, washers, and hooks.
Step 2: Scrub down the license plates. Mine were pretty gross because they'd been on my Explorer and Jeep, but nothing some spray duster and hot water couldn't manage.
Step 3: Mark out and cut your license plates, leaving an inch or so of overlap for the rivets. We used an angle grinder, but you could probably get away with using tin snips as well.
Step 4: No pictures, but after making the cuts, we clamped the plates together and drilled holes through both for the pop rivets. Rivet together, starting with the center, then drill the top holes, rivet, bottom holes, rivet, and fill in the blanks.
Step 5: Line up your franken-plate on your slab of wood, use a pencil to mark off the centers of the holes/slots, keeping in mind that you have to fit the hooks on there as well. If you're using oak like us, pre-drill undersized holes before putting in screws/washers by hand.
Step 6: Measure out and pencil in your intervals for the key hooks. Pre-drill undersized holes.
Step 7: Add hooks and mounting provisions of choice, hang it up, and load it up with your keys. See, just because we have a 3/8ths wrench chilling next to the bathroom sink doesn't mean we're disorganized!
You'll notice there are some placeholders on there too ;)

I'm still not sure fusing together like two anime characters was a good idea for the state of Michyork, but it sure did get them far more power in the house of representatives. They have more representatives now than Texas.
I'm honestly hoping this fusion trend stops. Florida doesn't need to get any bigger than it already is.

Hey Yamahog, Hammerhead here (duh). Just wanted to get back to you on the issue that came up the other day with Bigblock. We’ve spent a long time discussing this as a group and have come to the conclusion that while everyone in the shit fight got covered, you went our of your way to fling shit i.e harass BigBlock. I want to make it clear that BigBlock has his share of the blame and is getting a similar comment from us. I also want to make it clear this has nothing to do with the context of the comments (i.e. who was right or wrong re: sexism/trans/race). When we all looked at it, discussed it and debated it we voted that the hostile way you comported yourself in the comments is worthy of warning. Again, this isn’t related to the context of the debate, that is something we will be dealing with in regards to our comments directed at BigBlock, this is an issue of you taking it personal and going on the attack.
What does this warning mean? Because of the .kinja changeover we’re looking at our policies and rules and making more clear who we handle things like this. The new policy is simple and clear:
1. First offence - Warning
2. Second offence - Lose of authorship on Oppo (still can comment, not grayed, not banned). Petitions to reclaim authorship are debated before the group.
3. Third offense - Ban
On a personal level, I get it. We all do. Things get heated and passions bubble close to the surface, none of us are immune it to it. We all need to be vigilant to keep our emotions in check here and elsewhere. We like you here, you are a valued contributor, we hope you stick around and enjoy Oppo with us. Thanks for your time.

I have to be honest with you and tell you that I don’t have any interest of digging into that can of worms. I will say that how you say something is as important as what you say. If its any consolation, we got after BigBlock for the same kinds of tone issues.

I guess I should take this opportunity, since you are here for some reason... to point out that in our discussions the moderators found that you showed a level of civility and restraint that didn’t warrant a discussion like this between us. Make no mistake, you were hanging in that shit fight with the others, but we were happy to see comport yourself in accordance with the rules. So thanks, have a great day.

I’ll be honest as well: it would be of absolutely no consolation to hear that arbitrarily judged tones (his and mine) seem to be the bigger issue in this case than the persistent transphobia, which is allegedly against The Rules, not to mention egregiously disrespectful to our openly trans members. If you (collective you) don’t actually care to keep this place free from transphobia/racism/sexism, just stop saying you do and it’ll make things so much clearer.

I understand that you have strong feelings regarding this issue, but if you can’t have a civil debate on the topic on this forum...a topic which is mired in controversy of which difference of opinion are not only likely but ensured or even varied levels of education/understanding...than that IS the issue. I guess the long and short of it is that there is a difference between a debate on the topics of sex/gender/trans/cis and using those topics for the purpose of discrimination or hate. Using sexists or transphobic language or images with blatant intent to disparage or discriminate is what we have no tolerance. I’m not defending his views on the matter, but I am defending his rights to discuss them in a civil environment.

If we could stop with the continued use of your perception of my emotions to discredit my statements and talk down to me, that’d be great. Anyway.
Misgendering someone after being repeatedly corrected is blatant transphobia.
Referring to a trans person as a “ body kit on a Fiero ” is most certainly “transphobic language or images with blatant intent to disparage or discriminate.”
I don’t think either example constitutes a “civil environment.” But if you can’t even provide me with an example of what I did to warrant a warning besides essentially ‘watch your mouth,’ then I have no expectations of an explanation as to what aspects of my tone are considered uncivilized while repeated transphobia and trans erasure is apparently considered civil conversation.

From my view, the transphobia was coming from someone who completely refused (or couldn’t) to see reason, logic, or science. The only reason he wasn’t banned or similarly warned is because we couldn’t tell if he was actually that dense or just playing at it (I have my suspicions).
His questions still irritate me. But PaulJones responded better than I could have.
Total aside, I still want this place to be one of inclusion, not exclusion. I personally apologize if you don’t think we’re meeting that.

I think I should step in and say that the reason you got “tone” instead of a specific example was to avoid additional drama not to create it. tactic failed on my part. My goal was defuse, not escalate, I take responsibility for failing in that effort.

I love all of you to death, but frankly, you all sometimes bewilder the hell of me. Granted, that’s in no small part due to my own ignorance, but there are nevertheless a few things I’d like to address here:
His perceived intent doesn’t make it any more or less transphobic though...
That is completely true. The words he typed out were indeed transphobic, irrespective of the context that they are taken in. That being said, intention does matter. Remember that post about the guy who got a tattoo of an alternator and thought it was a turbo? Yeah, he’s an ignorant moron when it comes to automotive parts. But, then, he also wasn’t trying to be an asshole or an ignorant moron. He was just too ignorant to realize just how ignorant he was, if that makes any sense. While that example isn’t quite on the same plane as the transphobic ignorance previously displayed by any means, the underlying concept is much the same. He’s simply too ignorant to understand just how ignorant he really is.
In and of itself that can be helped, but if he wants that help; only if he wants to understand. It seems very clear to me that he is perfectly content to be ignorant in this regards. As sad as that is, there’s not much that anyone, much less you or me, can do to change that. At some point, after having attempted to have a civil discussion only to get more ignorance in response, it’s best to simply not waste the energy any further.
Xyl0 reported someone for transphobic comments (which to my knowledge remains unaddressed)
I addressed them personally. I saw that they were flagged, I understood why they were flagged, and I handled it. When I do something like that, though, that does not mean that I’m going to tell anyone else about it. There was a problem that was pointed, and it was addressed. If it happens again, I will look into further measures. But otherwise, beyond the initial flagging of a problem, the resolution of that problem is the business of no one save the mod and the individual in question. I am not beholden to report to anyone on such matters, and nor would it be proper to do so.
Please bear in mind - just because you don’t hear anything further on the matter doesn’t mean that it hasn’t been addressed.
in response I’ve been told to watch my tone (subject to whims undefined) or else
I’m not going to lie, most people here simply don’t have a way with words. At all. I have seen examples that you are inherently pointing at here, and I completely understand where you’re coming from. I think that in many cases, the topic that was meant to be addressed was not the topic that was addressed based on the word choice.
From what I understand, there’s a perception that you are a take-no-bullshit person - and when you see bullshit, you call it out for being the bullshit that it is. More power to you, I like seeing stuff like that. But sometimes, there might be better ways of addressing that bullshit. You can be pretty damn aggressive about it, and that’s something I’ve also seen. I don’t criticize you for it and I don’t necessarily think that you’re in the wrong. I do, however, sometimes think that a little more of a cold, rational approach might be better depending on the situation. Ultimately, that, I think, is what has been meant to be communicated.
But I absolutely agree that that isn’t necessarily what was actually communicated, and as a result, I understand your perspective and no one can fault you for it.
And the next counterpoint that comes from that - does that not implicitly hold you to a higher standard than the drivel that frequently infests this place? Yes. Yes it does. I am holding you to a higher standard than those morons. Why? Because I know you’re better. You are an individual with depth, knowledge, intelligence, enthusiasm, and the ability to communicate it all. That’s not only a pretty goddamned rare thing around here, it’s a pretty goddamned rare thing in life in general. Congratulations, you are in both blessed and cursed by being in, like, the 1% of humanity. The blessing is that it can be quite the wonderful world out there. The curse is that it can also be quite the terrible world out there when you realize how many morons there really are.
The other curse to that is the simple curse of cognition. If you are aware of a potential for a higher standard, then you are held to the responsibility of trying to meet that higher standard. Personally, I fail that standard on a regular basis. A look through my commenting history will illustrate that quite nicely. I really do try, though.
All of this is not meant to justify holding you or anyone else to a higher standard. It’s not meant to make you think it’s fair. It’s simply meant to explain why people like you and me are held to a higher standard. It sucks, but there it is. If nothing else, the boat isn’t empty, and I’m honored to be in the same boat as you in that regard.
while Snap runs around flaunting his tone left and right (not to mention appearing to have serious grudge issues)
...and now a more difficult topic. Frankly, I have no idea how to even approach this one, as I’m not quite sure I fully grasp it in its entirety just yet. That being said, I won’t shy away from addressing the little pieces of it that I do (I think) grasp.
Before I do, however, I’ll let you in on something of a little secret: I’m a renegade mod. By that I mean that I have little outside interaction with the other mods here. In addition to the moderator email account (which I do not have access to), there is also an Oppomoderator group on G+. I do not have a G+ account, and therefore do not participate in that group, which is often where discussions take place. Instead, I operate somewhere on the fringes. I don’t interact much, but I quietly watch and quietly step I feel justified in doing so. If I need to communicate something to the other mods, I’ll email Gamecat235. Otherwise, I’m generally in the dark about much of what goes on here. Sometimes, it’s a pain in the ass. Other times, it’s kind of nice. While I could create a G+ account easily enough, I personally hate G+ and also somewhat enjoy a little autonomy.
What the hell does that have to do with the topic at hand? Well...
Snap is an interesting character, just like the rest of us. He certainly has his own (very strong personality), just like you and I do. From the sideline fringes, I can certainly observe some tensions between various people, including you and Snap. I don’t know enough about either of you and the extent of your interactions with each other to know exactly what’s going on, though. I don’t know the full extent of Snap’s perception or his approach. All I know is what I see - there is tension. I don’t think that you or Snap are bad people or are entirely wrong or right one way or the other. But I know that there is a misunderstanding, a misperception or two, somewhere between you two.
But, being a renegade mod, so to speak, also comes with it’s drawbacks - namely, I don’t quite have the wherewithall or the ability to try to figure out what’s going on and mediate. And frankly, I’m okay with that. You two are grown adults. You don’t need me or anyone else to figure your shit out for you.
and now we’ve been deterred from doing anything but shutting up and/or leaving.
I don’t perceive that to be the case, though I do understand why you might. As I suggested to BigBlock440 the other day, a little perspective shift can be a very interesting thing. I don’t mean to say that your perspective is wrong, but I will assert that it’s one of may different perspectives. From your perspective, you see only two options. From my perspective, I see a few more than that.
What the actual fuck.
Indeed. I feel much the same way about the shit that goes down around here.
Apology accepted, though once again I wonder why I bother :(
I don’t. I know exactly why you bother. You bother with it because, quite frankly, you are a cut above most around here, and you’re too strong and too proud to let their stupidity ruin your enthusiasm. Sometimes, though, the best way to do that is to work with their stupidity, rather than against it.
*hands Gamecat a large beer*

Were it so easy.
Unfortunately, transphobia (like racism, sexism, etc.) did not arise overnight, and nor will they be addressed and solved over night. That’s going to take a long, long time. On a more microcosmic scale around here, it’s not an issue that we, as mods, have ever really thought about before.
Does it fit within The Rules? Absolutely. But we’ve just never seen it before, and we’re still working to so much as train ourselves to know it when we see it. Sometimes, it’s blatantly obvious - other times, to people who don’t think to look for it, it’s very subtle. We each have a lifetime of being ignorant of it. It’ll take some time to fully understand not necessarily the concept itself (which is pretty goddamn straightforward), but all the was that the concept manifests itself.
There’s also the fact that I’ve stressed over and over again, and for good reason: All of the mods here are volunteers. We do this in what time we are able to spare. While there may be a relatively large number of mods listed, the reality is that only a small handful are ever active at any given point in time. We address what we see, but we do not, and cannot, see everything.
In otherwords, please be patient. We’re trying. Oppositelock is a big place, and we are constantly faced with new issues that we had never even remotely imagined.
I was promised oatmeal chocolate chip cookies once upon time. I never did get them. Oh well. Welcome to dark side, the cookies were a lie.
