Why are so many people still hoping that Marchionne will somehow find a jumbo jet full of money and invest it in bringing Lancia back to life and to America?

In the United States they are, elsewhere they are Chrysler.

So go buy a Chrysler Voyager or a 300. It's technically also a Lancia. Have fun with that.

Chryslers, including the Chrysler badged Lancias, are being withdrawn from RHD countries due to sales or the lack thereof. I think the Lancia name continues in mainland Europe.

I think over time, Lancia just kind of lost it's place in FCA Italy's lineup. It became what Mercury was to Ford, Oldsmobile was to GM, or what DeSoto (cars) was to FCA US's predecessor. Basically, an increasingly marginalized brand with a dwindling customer base, and the realization that Fiat and Alfa Romeo could be expanded to do its job just as well, if not better, without the expense of maintaining another brand.

Sergio Marchionne, as a general rule, isn't averse to having lots of small niche brands. Its why he greenlit Ram and SRT and why he's keeping Fiat as a MINI/Smart competitor in North America.

So far, he is keeping Lancia for the Italian domestic market, but only with the Ypsilon, Voyager, and Delta; which does fit his niche brand habit. If sales in Italy stay strong enough, the badge will survive, but they won't ever be able to justify unique models for just one country, so any future Lancias will have to be badge engineered. And it could well go the way of Autobianchi after the Delta and Ypsilon run out their cycles.

I wouldn't be surprised. The Ypmethsalon was never a great looking car. Looks like a failed Chrysler concept car from the early 2000's
