a friend of mine today keeps posting pics of cars he picked up in the 80's for relative peanuts. 240Z for a couple hundred, free BMW Bavarias etc. so it got me thinking - What would be the best time to have a middle class income, and be someone into 10+ year old cars with some space to store stuff. And what 3 cars would you pick up and keep around? For me I would choose the 70's. And the first damn thing I would buy would be something dead cheap from the late 50's into the 60s. Maybe something like this

Whatever the last decade is before they ban manual driving so like 2150 or something. Good stuff keeps coming out so I wouldn't want to pass up on any of that. Plus, values should plummet since they'll all turn to pumpkins when they're banned from the road.

Post war. Even though I don't like post war designs I like the scene.

Oh that's easy, I'd be in the late 70s when no one could afford gas and buy ALL THE BIG BLOCK MUSCLE.

Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II

Torino Super Cobra Jet

And for a little bit more boxy, 66 Mercury Comet Cyclone GT:

Born in the 50's, 20 years old in the 70's and getting a nice job and more income in 1980.

Sure, fuel price hiked up, but you could get the best muscle cars (chargers, Camaros, challengers, Chevelles) for peanuts.

I'd get a 70 Challenger, 69 Charger and 454 Chevelle SS.

My father used to tell me stories of how he would buy Mustangs for next to nothing and use them in demolition derbies... Not just shitty inline sixes, but he had a 71 Mach 1 at some point. He also ran a 59 Cadillac in his first race because ''people would move the fuck out of your way when they saw you coming!''

I was born in the wrong era.

Am I a rich car guy or a broke car guy?

Actually, doesn't matter. No better time for being into cars than the present.

Those skinny front tires! What are they, 145s?!

Based on my personal tastes, probably the 1950s or 1960s. That was the era before the collector car hobby really took off, so a lot of coachbuilt classics from the '20s and '30s were still just old cars. Duesenbergs weren't ever dirt cheap, exactly, but they were attainable to people that weren't millionaires during that period.

The downside is that even mundane wear items like tires were hard to get for those cars back then, so it wasn't uncommon to see old Marmons and Pierce-Arrows with tractor tires at concours events, but small price to pay.

15 Years ago. cheap muscle cars, cheap E30s, cheap (and yet to be ruined) S-chassis, cheap old Porsches, etc...

Best era to be a car enthusiast would be the 50s/60s. During this time the pre war cars would be cheap. I have heard stories of Duesenbergs being stupid cheap. I would live in that era and buy all the dual cowl phaeton pre war classics I could find.

My Montego has skinny ass tires right now. That'll change eventually.

Mid 90s. All of my favorite 80s designs would just be dirt cheap old turds, my favorite 70s/60s models would be new enough to consider DDing, and I'd be close enough to the modern collector car market that I could make some serious profit on some smart buys (911, E30 M3, NSX).

I'd have to wade through all the crap of the mid 2000s to return to the modern performance car renaissance, but I'd be DDing the 1989 911 cabriolet that I bought for ten grand the whole time.

This is of course assuming I'm some sort of time traveler and/or have knowledge of the future. If that wasn't the case, I'd choose the present, or maybe the 60s.

Definitely the late seventies for me, cheap Jaguars, Austin Healeys, Aston Martins, Mustangs, Porsches, Alfas. They were just cheap out of date used cars then, I started driving in 77, but all I could afford was a $400 Sprite.

It's a shame it's not the original motor because I'd be in an argument with my wife about this over the weekend otherwise.
