Which is going to be the most reliable? Assume they all have 45k miles, because they do.

I would think the Mercedes, but I'd rather have the 5-Series.

Probably the Merc but I'd pick the Audi since their 3l diesels sound amaze-balls.

Mathias Rios, another oppo, has an ML with the 320 engine. It has over 250k miles and hasn't given him any problems so far.
But I'd rather have the BMW.

Google "E60 reliability"
3 people I know had E60s, bought new. All 3 of them were traded in within a year.

Late 90s to early 2000s Mercedes are pretty unreliable... I'd think 5 series is the most reliable of that bunch... but that's like asking which of the following will most likely bite your head off if you're in a locked room with, a lion, a tiger, or a leopard?

05 is a bad year for the E60. The center display can die (no sat nav, AC, radio, etc...) and has to be reset at the dealership. In my stepdad's 05 this happened evry 2-3 months. In 07 or so they revised the system and made it bulletproof.

Turbo models? I'd take the NA E60 over the 320 Mercedes.

The BMW, assuming you dont get a lemon, will be the most reliable.
As an added bonus, its also the most engaging.
I came very, very close to replacing my E46 with a 6-speed E60 530i.

I'll bet money atleast 2 of them were early 535's

Only one of them was. The others were 530is

Me too. But I've heard bad things about early 2000 Mercs.

How much does resetting the center display cost?

It is the one I like the most, but so far the main problem seems to be with the electrics.

I have no idea. It was a leased company car, so I don't even know who paid the bill. The inconvenience alone should be a reason to avoid the earlier ones.

I'm also highly biased in most cases. Honestly I wouldn't care about reliability rolling around in a luxury midsize sedan though.

This applies to all german cars.

Why is this a question?
Citroen C6 with a 3.0 liter diesel all the way! (Though I have no idea, I live in the States...)
But air suspension! And xenons! And weird concave rear window! Viva la France!

The mid-2000s were a bad time for ze Germans I think, but anyways...
DD: Mercedes, because they're classy and understated
Track: BMW, because RWD and a straight-6 engine
Burn: Audi, because it's going to break anyway
