I just sat through my first tornado (watch.) But apparently there hasn't ever been a tornado that was that close to Tulsa in a while. Being a Californian, I was outside taking pictures until the Campus Police officers told me to go into the library.

Holy crap. That's one hell of a thunderstorm. Welcome to the Midwest. It does no good to freak out about watches, or even warnings, but you must respect those storms, and keep a weather eye. Especially in Tornado Alley.

I used to enjoy Tornado watching, but then April 27th happened.

Growing up in OK, watches eventually become passe. Warnings are serious business though.
Here's my mom's car after the last tornado went through Moore.

Nader's came through and fucked up the southeast. We personally didn't get hit, but we watched an EF-5 graze over our land before it wiped out part of a town. We found stuff in our field from over 150 miles away.

Well, shit, that is close. I've lived in the Midwest the majority of my life and haven't had quite that close of a call. Count your blessings man. I hope the folks in that town made it out alright.

I won't swear to it, but I think a few didn't. 4 died in my county, and if it had have been a mile another way, it would've been a lot worse. Our county didn't cancel schools, despite the warnings, and one of the schools campus's got grazed by an EF5. Has it taught the Board of Education anything about being cautious, no. Unless there is a chance of a snow flake.

We actually get put under tornado watch all the time up here in Western NY state during the summer. Nothing ever really materializes, however, except maybe one of two F-zero twisters every couple of years that flip over 18 wheelers. Probably for the best.
What university is this btw?

Are twisters really that frequent for you guys that you just hang around and watch them? Do you actually see a lot of them in person, or just get put under a warning?

Once every decade, Alabama takes the "Tornado Alley" crown. Usually there isn't anything worth worrying over, but when the time comes, it gets bad. The most F5's to touch down in a single state in a day, was in Alabama. So usually we would just watch the clouds, but on this occasion, we saw a piece of a roof fall from the sky. We decided it was time to get down low, and about 2 minutes later, the loudest thunder and brightest lightning I have ever experienced occured. For about 3 minutes it was almost like an earthquake, knocking stuff off the walls and all. Of course being in Alabama our neighbor stood in his garage and watched, and saw a twister starting to form over our house, then it proceeded to wipe out part of a town a few miles east.

Thankfully it wasn't any worse than it was (one person did lose their life...). All we got down south was high winds and a healthy thunderstorm.
Hey, y'all, watch this!

I had an ex-boyfriend who was a Californian living on the East Coast for the first time in his life (Carolinas), and he would get so freaked out by tornado watches/warnings. I was always like, "Y'all have fucking earthquakes and shit out there. How is this scarier?"
Basement won't save you from an earthquake. That shit ain't right.
