Thinking about trading-in my Focus ST for a BMW X1 28i

Yes this is happening, the Focus is too small in terms of cargo space, the MPG's are too bad and thanks to a recent ski accident, the clutch is really hurting my left knee.

Kinja'd!!!

In terms of perfomance, both cars are equally fast but the Focus is definitely a better handler. Since 90% of my driving is either bumper to bumper heavy traffic or highway, I could care less about the superior handling or the manual tranny.

I can sell the St for about 2.5k more than I owe on it and BMW is currently offering no interest and 2k off on the x1.

Financially, it would exactly the same.

You can unfollow me right now if you want!

Both are neat, I personally would drive a X1, but i bet it'll be a good car.

Wow, it seems like a lot of people are either crashing or wanting to get rid of their STs right now. An X1 doesn't sound like that bad an idea. What other options would you consider?

X1's are actually really nice cars. My cousin drives a white one and it looks fantastic.

We already have an F30 328i xdrive, so I'm familiar with that drivetrain.

So fast and efficient.

Also, winter has been long (not even over yet) here in Montreal and I'm fed up with front wheel drive.

I am sorry to hear of your left knee. I am really a left knee accident expert having had two severe kneecap dislocations on it, and one surgery. What did you do? What kind of price are you thinking for the ST? I am not really interested, but I am considering a new car this fall so I am curious.

Sad thing is all these knee accidents and I am only 27. lol.

Time for us lower on the financial totem pole to sweep in :). Except my next car will either be charger or veloster.

Could an Outback with the 3.6 or the Forester 2.0 XT be possible candidates?

Both are too big for my tastes, mand the 3.6 Outback must not be too good on gas...

I really like the X1. My neighbor used to have a blue 35i (?) m-sport, pretty much loaded.

kidding, but meh, w/e I never got the fost phase .SOOOOO many ppl bought one. to me, its just a focus with a turbo some nice seats. nothing to write home about. and yet people are treating it like god.

same, if not more so, applies to the fiesta ST. sure, its a decent car...but at the end of the day, its a hopped up fiesta.

What about a V60? Although those probably aren't great on fuel either.

Volvo doe not have enough volume to propose incentives, the S60/v60 is consistently more expensive than the 3er sedan/touring with lesser driving dynamics and abysmal resale value.

You need to be really dedicated to that brand to buy one right now.

I don't know about pricing in your country of residence, but here the X1 is rather similarly priced to a 3-series Touring. A car that's superior in every way. Well, except when you care a lot about increased ride height or having a smaller footprint.

I'm sure I can get that euro vacation for less than the premium they are asking and the lack of resale value, no thanks.

That's not the kind of incentives I'm looking for !

In Canada, it's on par with the 320i, it's like their cheapest car and you get the real 240hp n20 instead of the 180 hp one.

You also get the roofbars standard.

Great value here, not to mention the hydraulic steering.

I really like them in M-sport trim. They got the manual transmissiom over in Europe. I would totally drive one.

Since you want economical, have you thought about the F31 328d? Diesel AWD wagon!

Montreal, where are you from ?

Kinja'd!!! duurtlang > Kate's Dirty Sister

Kinja'd!!!1

Weird that the X1 is cheaper than a similarly equipped 3-series there, while the 3-series sedan (with the same drive train) is cheaper here and the wagon is on par with the X1. Even before taxes, emission taxes that hurt the x1 more than a 3 with the same drive train due to fuel consumption.

Anyway, it might just be my personal bias speaking up. I truly detest the x1 while I don't dislike the 1-series or 3-series, so even with Canadian prices I'd spent more on a 3-series Touring than on a faster X1. I do realise it makes little sense to argue about taste.

We had an E90 328i xDrive with a stick. It was really hard to get rid of that car. The motor sounded so good.

Didn't like the turbo 4 in the X1 when we first drove it but have really grown to love it. We have a F10 528i M Sport xDrive too. The 5 feels much smoother but the X1 seems quicker. Not sure what the weight difference is but the X1 is stripped and the 5 is pretty loaded with soft close doors and multi contour seats but that probably explains the difference in acceleration.

I drove from Minneapolis to Colorado and back in the X1 and got about 28 mpg while doing about 10 over the limit. BMW speedos are high so I probably wasn't really speeding ;-)

Did you pull the trigger?
