I'm prepping the windows for the installation of new blinds tomorrow—remove old hardware, clean, spackle, paint. The old hardware was installed by the previous owner, an EE. He mounted these curtain brackets with 1.5-2" nails hammered directly into the frame around the window. 4 holes, 3 different nails. The only weight they held was the sheers. Now I have considerably more plaster to repair than I had hoped. Fortunately, my boys weren't around to hear me cuss.

I am so guilty of crap like that. Mounting spice rack? Mount it so it can hold 50 lbs lol.

However I at least use matching nails/screws. I hate it when people use whatever is lying around.

I am educated as an ME - I wouldn't do this shit unless I were out of 2" screws - though those might be mix'n'matched.

Very true...as a EE (well, CE(EE)) my physical hardware installs are hilariously ghetto. As are my drywall repairs. Philosophy is...if it works it's good enough.
However, my appliances live well beyond their intended obsolescence due to affecting repairs on the 'non-serviceable' electrical parts. So there.

You got off light man. When we moved into our house I had to replace blinds for 2 windows and a patio door. Each window had 3 curtain rods on separate brackets. Each bracket was installed with metal expanding anchors. Walls looked like a gunfight gone bad before I patched everything. Former owner trained maintenance techs for a major airline.

I forgot to add that I have 2 friends who are engineers. one is an EE, the other is a Civil. I can tell you some funny stories of their quirky ways.

I'm an Industrial Engineer who is working as a Field Engineer, so I'm even worse. I honestly consider things like dissimilar metal corrosion when doing things around the house.

Depends on the location. If there is a stud, then I will use a 1.5" wood screw. No stud? I grab one of those 65-lb screw-in drywall anchors.
