A) It is stupid trying to keep the TG cash train going by replacing presenters.
B) How about getting the person that is best suited for the job? A person who will not try to be a replacement "Clarkson", but who will bring a fresh wind into the old shed we know. Who can capture the audience with his/her very own unique personality. Who has a working chemistry with the other blokes. Gender should not be a factor.
C) Female quotas are stupid. Just get the person who is best. This goes to all employers.

Jennifer Clarkson. We all know the 918 would have won.

Bernie Ecclestone. It's not like anyone's going to watch the show after Clarkson leaves. Everyone's going to hate it and the BBC, so why not direct the hate and someone who truly deserves it?

May I suppose by your post that you are a Clarkson fan? You and he might have ought to discuss over a pint.

I expect folks would watch for a show or two in order to see what's up. I think BBC has a HUGE opportunity here.

Yeah, I would watch for an episode or two just to. But I think people's expectations are going to be for it be exactly what Jeremy, James, and Richard had, and no one is ever going to be able to duplicate that kind of chemistry and camaraderie. The BBC would be better to just let Top Gear go out in a blaze of drama and glory and create a whole new show to take its place instead of trying to patch up a show that will never live up to what it once was.

Yes, I am a fan of Clarkson. I was an avid watcher of TG for the better part of a decade, but I think that the BBC's decision to punish him for exploiting his position was 100% correct and the appropriate thing to do. I am however opposed to the thought keeping TG going simply with a new cast and no changes to the formula whatsoever, because that wouldn't work at all. If the BBC were willing to keep TG alive (and it seems they are), they have to make fundamental changes to the concept. Without those, the old fanbase would only keep comparing it to the Clarkson-May-Hammond Top Gear, and we all know how well that worked out for TG: US and TG: AU. The legacy Clarkson has left behind on TG is too big to keep it going in the same way. I am a forward thinking person, I am all for change and evolution, but I am not a fan of the overly polished, the 100% politically correct that will keep everyone happy. I like edges. I prefer personality over something shaped by a commitee (pun intended). Which is why I have my doubts to your propositon of replacing someone like Clarkson with a woman only to make the show that little more socially agreeable ( at least thats how I interpreted it ). I am not against casting a female presenter for a future incarnation of TG per se, but I want the producers to get the best presenters they could possibly have regardless of gender. If the best possible presenters were all-female, fine. If they were all-male, fine. If they were mixed, also fine.
I am not going to mourn the demise of the current TG forever, I will wait if the producers can come up with a worthy follow up, as long as they don't try to be 100% politically correct in that incarnation and force the presenters to be something they are not.

Thank you for the thoughtful reply! If I am honest, I was put off by the idea that somehow, I was suggesting a quota. Nothing of the sort. The car world is entirely dominated by men and I would love to see some women. One commenter here suggested Sabine Schmitz. Wow: imagine Clarkson being replaced by a German woman . I mean, are there any women who can drive? Or that can appreciate an automobile? There must be. Are there any men out there watching TG who would enjoy seeing a woman outdriving Hammond and May? Who know perhaps more about cars than either of them? I certainly would.
Let's be honest: Top Gear is a sexist show.
I imagine having Hammond and May as co-hosts, with a new personality that they either kick around, or fail to keep in his or her place. My first thought was Tanner Faust. Then I thought, wouldn't it be cool to have a woman?
And on that subject, did you see Gillian Anderson? I was in awe. She flirted with Clarkson mercilessly . Daring him to look down her blouse, totally taking control of the interview. The entire conversation was on her terms. It was brilliant and I will always go soft inside whenever I hear that name. So yes, if you detected a whiff of equity talk — which I consider to be much more nuanced than political correctness — then your nose was probably right.
Clearly, lots of people adore TG. If TG can't survive Jeremy Clarkson's demise, then I resent Clarkson for killing TG.

I keep rereading your reply and finding more nuance.
You mention formula. Perhaps I am missing something, but I would give Clarkson credit for only perhaps 1/8th of the current formula. You've got stunning videography, great writing, stars in cars; lots of stuff that's not Clarkson.
YES: CHANGE THE FORMULA, keep the show. But keep the videography, keep the Stig, keep the airport track, keep the epic journeys (perhaps less the overtly trying to piss people off in other countries), and keep the cars.
Maybe a series of guest hosts...
There could be a lot of upside potential here.
Thanks for the dialogue.
