Well that didn't last long - we drove this home today.

Found a CPO Wolfsburg edition with just over 3K miles...and the lady loves it. Done and done.
Got them plaid seats.

Plaid seats are my favourite things about the GTI, hands down.

I had enjoyed my GLI so much that I forgot how much smaller the GTI drives and how much better it handles. Way less body roll.

How's the DSG? I've heard good things about it.

It's the first automatic VW I've ever owned (I've had 3 Golfs and a GLI) and it is OK. It isn't nearly as fun as the 6 speed but it is much better than the last car I drove with the flappy paddles.
Hard to say definitively as I don't have much seat time but it rides smoothly from the passenger seat. The GF was so excited she wanted to do all the driving on the way home.

Haha, nice. I've always liked the Mk6, but I'm not a huge fan of FWD.
Did she give the paddles a shot?

She has not as of yet and I am not sure she ever will. The fact that she is excited about a car, in general, is a change for her. Baby steps.

Oh, haha. At least she's getting there!
Can she drive stick? If not, that's the next step.

Congrats!

Hah, I was going to suggest you go for a GTI with the DSG as it's my go-to vehicle when someone's significant other doesn't want to drive a manual. Good call!

so if someone has leather and wants plaid, are the seats (front and rear) swappable?

Not as far as I know. My last VW was the Autobahn trim and you lose the plaid cloth seats since leather is a part of the trim package.
The best part about this Wolfsburg edition, IMO, is you get all the performance upgrades of the Autobahn (turbo motor, bigger wheels and calipers) and none of the frivolous stuff - no moon roof, no premium sound and most importantly I get to keep the plaid seats (and they are still heated).

Awesome. My wife has an '08 GTI, not sure what trim but no plaid which we both loved. I'm thinking about trading my WRX for a newer GTI by the end of the year and was curious. Thanks!
