We need to go back here. After that, Mars. After that, Some of Jupiter's moons, Titan, Pluto and then the Oort cloud. Then another star.

We got Lasers, we got (a patent for) deflector shields, we're starting to figure out fusion...what's the bloody hold up? GIVE US OUR STARSHIPS ALREADY

Humanity is far more interested in shooting small projectiles at each other than large ones to other worlds.

All the more reason for me not to want to live on this planet anymore

You know I got a political party leaflet through the mail today. I glanced at it and it was one party badmouthing another about some petty nonsense. I just thought, "wow, how can they muster up any fucks for this and yet so much more amazing stuff gets ignored," then threw it away.

Weirdly, there would be no space programs without this interest.

Sadly, yes, but that doesn't mean we couldn't have continued the science and left behind the weapons

I agree 100%. Let's go already. Do it while we can.

I love this quote, I read it on io9 a little while back.

Indeed.

I was around 6 years old(figure 1990ish) and I was certainly aware we had been to the moon. When in a discussion with fellow students about all the different types of cool bases we must have on moon by now, the teacher informed us that we stopped going in the 70's. That was probably the angriest I've ever been in my life.

All those destinations you mentioned were possible to achieve back in the 60's with external nuclear pulse propulsion, e.g. orion drive. Let that sink in for a couple of seconds. For 50 fucking years, we just dicked around in our backyard, occasionally throwing a probe at a planet and the furthest humanity has gotten from earth is ~238,900 miles. External nuclear pulse propulsion has the unique traits of having both respectable specific impulse and ludicrous thrust. But when the public hears nuclear power, they just shit themselves.

And don't get me started on the goddamn masturbatory wankfest that is the space elevator. That pipe dream won't be realized for at least a 100 years. Not only do you have to find a way to cheaply produce defect free nanomaterial, you have to produce a fuckton of it. Only then can you even begin designing the damn thing.

I would love to be proven wrong, but this dream won't be realized until we're long dead.

Been there, done that. Why do it again? Apparently NASA wants to repeat stuff. It's safe. Capsules and old tech rockets. Heck they're reusing the same engines leftover from the Shuttle for Orion. Mars I say. Mars is where it's at. Besides, China will beat us to the moon if we seriously start a mission there.
