I'm selling the wheels and tires from my Envoy after replacing them earlier this month.
I get a text late last night from a Rhode Island area code (I'm in Iowa) that reads like this, verbatim:
Hi, Your ad on Craigst sill avail.? what's ur lower asking price.? send Ur reply directly to [reasonably legit looking gmail address].
I don't have my email in the listing, just my phone number, so I'm a little wary of responding via email. I sent a text back saying that I'd like to get as close to asking price as possible and they are welcome to make me an offer.
Should I bother responding via email? It feels a little fishy to me.

Never ship things through CL. If the guy shows up with cash moneys, take it, but I'd never do a long distance transaction through it.

When I get sketchy looking messages like that, I reply "Item is available. No shipping, cash in hand at pickup in person."
Never hear back from them.

Meh, they could have a RI number and live somewhere else. I got my cell phone when I was in college and now I live in ME with an MA number.

Wouldn't hurt. Worst thing that can happen is nothing. I'd probably use my spam email address as a precaution.

Nope, I usually ignore any email that doesn't mention the specific item I'm selling. The fact that it says "your ad still available" vs "wheels still available" is a red flag to me.

This, but I would respond (with a temporary/fake email) it's always possible the person just moved out to iowa and doesn't have a new # yet.
Definitely no shipping tho

I'm one of the people out there that prefer emails. I can ignore / block an email way easier than a call or text.
I'd respond, answer his questions, and try to meet up in person.

Ironically, I have recent experience with this very scenario. A few months back I sold a set of tires on Craigslist, and would typically get these messages. I would always just say my listed price and that I would be willing to negotiate once the person saw them. Some dropped out, but one guy did end up buying them.
I wouldn't assume a Rhode Island number is a scam. People move all the time without changing their number. Just ask where their number is from, if they say something other than Rhode Island they're not trustworthy, and if they're a scam they'll leave you alone since you called them out.
