I'd still have to think about my 2-5, but number one is definitely:

A Place Promised in our Early Days.

It has a little bit of everything in it and I love it, and typical Makoto Shinkai heart breaking story.

Plus, just look at that art!!!

Ok these are my top five favorite anime. I try not to include stuff everyone else watches (Bebop, Fullmetal, Evangelion, death note, etc.) as they're pretty much a given. So my favorites tend to be lesser known shows with amazing stories.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wINa_Y…

5: Spice and Wolf : Surprised to find this so far down the list? Well don't get me wrong Spice and Wolf has one of my favorite duos of all time in Lawrence and Holo. Spice and Wolf is a masterpiece in the department of writing chemistry between characters, hell almost half the show is Holo and Lawrence talking about micro economics which would usually be really boring but because their dynamic works so well it's extremely entertaining to watch. Where the show fails in my opinion is when it separates the two characters. Holo and Lawrence only work as amazing characters when they have each other to work off of. However don't get me wrong it's an absolutely brilliant series that I highly recommend watching! Hell I've done it about 4 times and have read all of the novels they were based on! Also notable for being one of the only shows that's better in dub than in sub. I could listen to Brina Palencia read the yellow pages, she's like a female Morgan Freeman.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3lJ1D8…

4: Stein's; Gate : It has a microwave time machine and an amazing cast of characters. It has a very unique charm to it and can be hilarious one minute and then soul crushingly desperate the next. I love it. Also an amazing dub!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LV31EH…

3: Shinseaki yori. Sadly there are not too many good videos of Shinseaki Yori on youtube so here's the ending. If you ever want to watch a show that will crush you emotionally watch this. It's an absolutely BRILLIANT series and probably ranks at number 1 on my list of objectionably great anime. However if your homophobic bigot you might not like it because it has canon gay and lesbian characters, however their relationships are done very well in my opinion.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wN5JDM…

2: Zetsuen no Tempest : Shakespeare, guns, magic, and the animation budget of BONES in their prime. Awesome story with kickass animation, kickass story, and kickass characters. It's what you would get if you mixed death note with Fullmetal Alchemist! One of the most criminally unknown shows ever made in my opinion.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fyOHbN…

1: Mawaru Penguindrum : Penguindrum, oh penguindrum, where do I even start. Brothers' sister dies, gets brought back back to life by an magical hat and tells brothers to find some ambiguous thing called the "Penguindrum". I really can't describe the series without spoiling to all hell. Just know it's writing is absolutely brilliant!

4. Girls und Panzer (Ditto, but with badass tanks.)

3. Nichijou

1. Neon Genesis Evangelion (Because duh.)

My tastes are...eclectic. You could also throw Black Lagoon, Steins;Gate, Spice and Wolf, and a bunch of others in that list easily. Hard to pick only five.

All of Makoto Shinkai's movies are pure animation porn (no, not like that). It's earned his movie "5cm per second" the nickname "5 wallpapers per second." My favorite is "Children Who Chase Lost Voices" or as I like to call it "Cloud Porn: The movie, seriously look at these damn clouds"

[Spoiler warning, If you're reading this and you're not Alex go away!]

Man...Steins;Gate really ripped me apart when he finally caught up with that tall brown haired lady. From his frame of reference she'd killed his best friend since childhood so many times already, but from her's she hadn't done anything wrong yet (but would have as it was inevitable)...

Watching him finally snap and pummel the shit out of her was one of the most uncomfortable scenes in all of anime for me. And I like that. I like when characters in stories are forced to confront an ugly set of choices, and have to deal with ambiguity and morally gray consequences. Steins;Gate is probably one of the greatest time travel stories ever told.

It seems to be too "new" to real sink in with most of the Oppo fanbase. Seems like most of the mentions on here are pretty well seasoned or have been completed for a while. You have Bleach and One Piece which have a collective bazillion episodes between them, that alone is enough for a multiple generation span.

AoT has a pretty unique graphic styling which appeals to most. The story is nutso but it does get pretty gruesome. Neon Genesis and Guyver on my list have their own cringe moments but it isnt constant gore like you'd find in Elfen Lied (the first 10 minutes of that series are brutal ).

Bonus AoT gif

Like others, I'm having a hard time with order:

Am I really going to be the first one to suggest "Black Lagoon"? It's a slightly lesser version of Bebop, but that's still fantastic.

The remake of "Birdy the Mighty" has really well done animation. Also, the protagonist is a kickass redhead from space.

"Gurren Lagann" is my pick for giant-robot-fighting. Kamina's character makes that series worth watching on his own—but I was less interested in the second half of the series.

"FLCL" for flat-out WTF factor.

"Paranoia Agent" is just so atmospheric, if you don't get creeped out while watching it, I'd be surprised.

Lastly, watch "Redline," it's Japan mixing "Wacky Races" with "The Fast and the Furious," only much better than that sounds.

It is utterly atrocious. I mean, the technical aspects of the art are nice, but that's about the only good thing I can say about it. The refreshingly pragmatic designs of the original series are replaced by stupidly ridiculous machines that don't make an iota of sense. The story is shallow and similarly nonsensical. The characters are all little girls, even the characters in positions of power, with little diversity. There is also an overabundance of what I would consider inappropriate fan-service (and I'm no prude). Even the music is either rehashed from the first series (which was good music) or a ripoff from Pirates of the Caribbean . The whole thing is directed by the same guy who directed Linebarrels of Iron , which is a soft-core ero/harem anime (and is terrible).

The best episode in the entire thing was the one in the middle. Why was it good? Because it was just a montage of the events in the first series and featured the first series's opening theme.

Sorry for the rant. It just really bugs me because I loved the original series, where it was clear that its creators poured their soul into it even if they ran out of budget near the end and had to cut it to 26 episodes. The sequel is an obvious cash-grab riding all the currently popular clichés hard into the ground on the back of its predecessor.
