We're typically not easily swayed by the badge on the front of the car. Case in point. I was just looking up to see what king of WRX I could get for $15k. I prefer the hatch or wagon bodies so I narrowed my search. Unfortunately just the name Subaru hold a bit of merit and the prices for their cars prove this. The unitiated would be smitten with a low price deal like this :

Kinja'd!!!

$10,995 with almost 142k on the dash.

Fortunately I'm a car guy and know that you can get this same car but better refined in a Saab

http://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/…

Kinja'd!!!

$7,995 with a smidge over 99k miles on it.

43k miles younger AND $3000 cheaper just because of the badge it wears.

Hate to break it to you, but that is a standard 9-2x with the N/A 2.5, not the WRX drivetrain.

But that's a Linear which is a non-turbo. That Saabaru, is just an Impreza, not a WRX thus the lack of hood scoop.

Still apples to oranges though. ;-)

The 9-2x (pictured above) without the hood scoop is essentially a regular Impreza (160ish HP).

The 9-2x Aero had the hood scoop and all the WRX bits, pumping out closer to 230 horsepower.

Just edited it. Thanks for pointing that out. I found one with the WRX drivetrain that was only $1000 more than the NA motor albeit with 15k extra miles on it.

Yep I've been alerted and have since updated the post. Found one with the turbo one and it's still a steal of a deal.

Insurance is actually a little higher on the Saab. "Harder to find replacement panels"

I was mislead the same way when I first heard of the Saabaru I was lead to believe that they ONLY made a turbo version. Then I saw one without a scoop and was like "Whaaat, How can it have a top mounted Intercooler and no scoop?"

Probably she wished that she could be included with a more expensive car.

On a more serious note, I just realized that this place is in Mooresville. Go check out Randy Marion Subaru, and see if they have anything. Their salesman Brian Fogarty was great to deal with when I got my Outback. Also, they were really easy to negotiate with.

Honestly if I was wholeheartedly in the market for a car I'd be on my way there first thing this weekend. But I'm saving up for an S2000 if all goes well. I'm waiting to get it around November/December when convertible prices are quite low.

Good luck with the S2000, a close family friend has had one since new, and she seems to love it.

Pictured is one identical to her's. She is probably one of the coolest 60 year olds you could ever meet.

Yeah right. There are more than a few badge knobs on Jaloppo. Just look under any article about a Cadillac or Toyota, or BMW if you want to go the other way.

I've decided on an S2000 after months on deliberating on what two coupe/convertible I wanted. Here's this list in order: Miata, Fox Body Mustang, Camaro, Firebird, C4 Corvette, G35/G37, GTO and finally decided to shoot for an S2000. I also plan on getting a removable hard top for it on those chilly days that I won't be tempted to let the top down.

Maybe I was being a tad optimistic but I must hope us car people aren't all sucked into the hype of a badge. It honestly amazes me at the general Honda and VTEC hate here at times. I challenge anyone to not hit VTEC while in the drivers seat of on of the older high strung motors and not smile repeated each time they hit it. Hondas are very fun to drive.

I don't think anyone here hates older Hondas. But since the NSX died, Honda has chased Toyota sales volume by means of making cheaper, watered down product to the point that even Consumer Reports has had to check them up on it. In an era of Ford STs and RSs and VW Golf Rs and GTIs where is Honda?

Just asking, because I will probably never buy another car in my life (unless we leave the city) .... The final Saab. The last 9.5. Are they cheap now? Because that's the car I'd have, difficult repairs and all. Every Saab I ever drove was good. So sad they are fini.

Hell I'll be getting rid of my saabaru soon. Damn fun cars and they're such a sleeper. Especially with a big turbo. My only regret is I got an auto...

Those things were quite stunning. They seem to start around $14k for a base model with appropriate mileage and top out close to $30k for a loaded V6 model. Not sure what you consider cheap but there are definitely deals to be had out there between that range.

Fucking fuck. The ratio is reversed in my part of the country. A WRX will run you $7-$9k, $15k will get you close to '04 STi territory. The Saabaru, you know- the version I want more than anything? $9k-$11k, because they're goddamned impossible to find.
