I hope their car insurance doesn't pay up (health insurance yes), but car insurance I hope they say 'we pay for accidents and inadvertent damage, not sheer acts of great stupidity and ignorance. Is there anything else I can help you with?'.

Train fans. They like to record the trains. They have locomotives they like and dislike. They follow certain ones by the locomotive number on them - the locomotive in this incident was Union Pacific 5024, which RailPictures.net tells me is an EMD SD70M which has been in service since at least October of 2002.

My mom used to work as an EMT in rural Illinois, and she saw her fair share of car/train crashes. She said they were utterly horrible, and she didn't like to talk about them. I do remember her saying, though, that when they went on calls for motorcycle wrecks where the driver wasn't wearing a helmet that it was like "picking up a sack of marbles." Wear a helmet, folks.

That's what I thought, too, until I watched the alternate video . In it, the lights are indeed flashing. They also seem to be somewhat dim from that camera's angle, so I presume the lamps have a narrow angle at which they shed light.
There are also a pair of lights on both sides of the road in both directions.

Indeed, the lead locomotive is an Electro-Motive SD70M. It's actually one of the later models with the flared radiators designed to accommodate the larger cores needed for split-cooling. The trailing locomotive, UP 4249, is one of the earlier SD70s that did not have the flared radiators.

Why should people call you names because you posted a video in which people died. It's not like it was full of gore or anything. Honestly, I think that this serves as a reminder to check rail crossings. Turn the radio down when you approach them and slow down. There's a reason school buses have to stop at railroad crossings. Even if they have a gate on the crossing, there's a chance that it isn't working.
I looked the video up anyway. With all those people pointing their cameras down the tracks, the whistle blowing and the lights flashing, there is no excuse for the driver to have proceeded at that rate of speed. Just shy of him having a medial emergency at that moment that didn't allow him to slow down (seizure for example), this was the result of being an idiot. This never should have happened.
The roads are dangerous - be attentive at all times, even when you don't have other cars around you, there's still a million other things that can hurt or kill you.

This is a Union Pacific crossing a block from my house, here in Wisconsin.
If this roads sees 30 cars in a day, it would be surprising. The county highway crossing a block west has lights, the state highway crossing 3 blocks east has lights and barriers.
Signs-only is common on rural roads in Wisconsin. The train has to hit the horn before the crossing, but that's your only warning.

Exactly, I saw the footage yesterday. Un-signaled crossing, they were driving toward the train before they turned. Would you not look before you crossed?
But I used to be a contractor to the B&O/C&O and we would have people try to go around the grade crossing we had torn out to repair. They would get stuck on the tracks and we would charge them $25 to pull their car back off the tracks with a loader. People, WTF!!

I think the people filming were just railfans, not part of some stunt attempt. The second person filming had the camera focused entirely on the train the whole time, to the point that you almost don't even see the car (and wouldn't have seen the car at all if the car had actually made it). That and the way the car slowly approached the tracks (you can tell by the sound of the engine he's not even remotely trying to go fast) I think it was just a driver not paying attention at the same intersection as a cluster of railfans.

Wisconsin does not require helmet use, but I always wear one.
One time I went for a short ride, and left the helmet at home. I was just over a mile from the house when a girl did a left turn in front of me and I crashed my bike into the side of her car. It was at slow speeds and I pitched the bike sideways so I just bounced off her car and didn't get tossed. Still, that was the close call that prompted me to wear a helmet from then on.

From IMDB...
There has been some confusion over the title as none of that particular activity actually takes place in the film. Irvine Welsh has since gone on record to explain the title, comparing the unusual hobby to heroin addiction, ie, something that only the people who indulge in that pastime truly understand. To them, it makes perfect sense.

It actually got me thinking a bit about the couple of close calls I've seen. We have tracks near my area and there's a half dozen fatalities a year within ten miles. It's something I will make sure to teach my child to be aware of while driving. Bless those people's family and even the poor driver who it looks like is just a teen and inexperienced.
