Shopping online for switches... Trying to figure out the easiest/cleanest way to wire up a temporary substitute for the lack of an "ACC" position in the van, and it hit me...

I'm an idiot

Kinja'd!!!

!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , I wired in a relay so my permanently-hot radio would take a signal from my ignition. The new radio was pretty hungry at rest, and was draining the battery.

I found the switch, figured out were I was going to mount it, and was ready to go. As I got started, I realized that I had knocked the leads off the back of my cigar lighter, so I addressed that first. As I was sitting in the car (with no radio yet - since I hadn't installed the switch) the radio came on after I rested my arm against the radio.

What?

The keys were in my pocket. That's impossible! Did I waste my time last week? Did I do it wrong? I was confused.

I turned the radio off, then turned the car on, turned the radio on, etc etc.. I cycled through the on/off sequence of both the car and the radio several times, and it was working as I thought. Then I turned the car off, and tried to power the radio on with the keys in my pocket. It lit up and said, "One hour play" and I ran inside to RTFM.

When I got back to the van, I got my tools, put them away, grabbed a well-deserved beer for a job well done.

Ha ha! That's so funny. Done similar things myself. When all else fails, read the instructions.

I'm not sure of your age but this sort of thing is what tells you your getting old. It happens more and more frequently as time goes on. Something that has been the same will change, forcing you to either adapt or get cranky because "why couldn't they just keep it the same? Fuckers!" It will get to the point were you've had enough and no longer play the game, this is the time in your life when you officially start to age.

I'm not sure of your age

I had the previous radio* for 20 years.

^^ That should answer that.

*And it's still going....

Then you would have experienced this kind of thing before! ;)

Old car radios make great shed radios. My dad gave me his early 70's pioneer car radio in the early 90's. I had it in a few vehicles then retired it. A few years ago I made some shelf speakers for it and added a 12volt power pack. My Dad had just moved to a new place that had a garage so I took it over and gave it back to him, he got emotional as he had forgotten about his old radio. Turns out its the first thing he bought for his first car and the memories of his youth came back to him.

My head unit doesn't switch off when I cut power, it switches off after 3 minutes. Because Citroën being French, and us not liking to do anything like anyone else, has decided that the battery economy mode would start after 3 minutes of no keys in the in the ignition. So power = no radio (even if you start the unit after the car has been switched off, 3 minutes ONLY). I could make it so it shuts off when I remove the key, there's a wire for that (and it's not DIN...), but then I wouldn't be able to start the radio with no keys in the ignition... Stoopid stuff right here...

What's nice though with the 3 minutes thingy, is that the unit will start up as soon as you turn the key. And when you open a door. And when you unlock the car. And when you get a call if your phone is still hooked up to the bluetooth.
