I got a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! because my truck was making funny noises.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

The local Toyota dealership diagnosed a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and wanted $2000+tax to replace it.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I just got off the phone with the independent Toyota mechanic and he can't find anything wrong with the diff. No noises, no broken parts, etc etc. The bearings are fine and he's road tested it with success. In fact, he can't find anything wrong with anything...

Since it's at the shop I'm going to have all the oils changed (motor, both diffs, and transfer case) and have the drive train lubricated. I'll be back on the road in no time, and for a small fraction of the expected cost.

The moral of the story? Always get a second opinion. And check your lug nuts once in a while, kids.

hazah! I thought a broken did sounded suspect. I'll bet it was a rock in your caliper or in between the dust shield. what did it cost to pull and inspect?

No idea, although someone did suggest that it could have been simply a loose wheel. Steel wheels + flat wheel nuts (not the pointy "acorn" type) + wildly fluctuating temperatures could cause the wheel to loosen.

How the Toyota dealership came up with "broken diff" - I can't even...

It might have been that, or it was a loose wheel (which makes me think of this story):

Well, my wife calls me to tell me she went out to run some errands and the truck was making some noise when she came to a stop. Shit! What did she screw up now? I told her to turn around and get home.

I took the truck out to drive around the neighborhood and there was a noise as I accelerated and a delay when I stopped. I thought I screwed up the break lines or the abs sensor lines and as for the noise I thought I didn't tighten down something, in the suspension assembly.

So I set up to take it apart and you are probably reading this laughing at me because you already know what it is. As I go to loosen the lug nuts they were already loose! I felt like such a dumbass! I have never had loose lug nuts before...

I wasn't playing with the wheels, but I've been told that this can happen with steel wheels. It's never happened to me before, at least...

Probably going to cost like $200-250 for the whole deal. Towing was free thanks to the CAA.

Love when that happens. Like my car too. Could barely run, suspected timing chain problem. Goody. NOPE! Broken coil in cylinder 4. $129 dollars later back on road :)
