Let's look at the transition from Alabama to Tennessee in my hometown.
The red line is where the gravel/tar chip begins into Tennessee. Before that is a nice paved and painted 2 lane. This is a main-ish road.

But I still love living in a state without income tax, meven though the sales tax is mondo high to cover the gap. Which is sad because TN used to make money from TVA power being sold to other states so that they didn't have the kind of tax expenditures of other states, but thanks to the Anti-Coal movement we are losing much of our power backbone and therefore are unable to sell TVA power to other states.
