That XF-103 was nuts. The pilot would have had to use a retractable periscope to see forward. They intended it to go at Mach 4 to intercept Russian bombers coming over the North Pole. And the thing was frickin' huge, with a fuselage measuring 85 feet in length and a fuel capacity of 3,700 pounds. Like so many other projects, the design was ahead of the engine. It did reach mockup, though. Note the downward-firing ejection capsule.

As you've mentioned before, truly a golden age of aeronautical engineering.

But the B-52 can carry so much more freedom.

What about the F-111?

I considered included the F-111 and F-117 (even though it was a bomber, not a fighter), but they've never really be considered part of the century series based on what I've read.
I do love some Aardvark, though.
