Dear Oppolops:
If I wanted to be un-grayed on a sub-blog - say, Car Buying - would I be better off pinging one of the FP editors to have Car Buying follow me (like Truck Yeah! and Black Flag do) or one of the regular Car Buying posters, like Tavarish or Tom McParland?

I responded to Tom and Tavarish a couple times on their articles and was un-greyed pretty quickly.

It helps if you get in early. They get hundreds of comments once they get posted to the FP and it's easy to get buried

My theory is to just write something clever, preferably with an image to the OP as soon as the article goes live, then ask in the post script to be ungrayed politely. It keeps seen and you will be seen as someone who will contribute value
