Really a simple question, do you buy cars based on what you want to do with the car or what you actually do with it?

Kinja'd!!!

I want something even less practical for my next car even though I mostly just commute in it. Something with more space/livability would make a lot more sense ….. but fuck logic, amiright?

Just for the sake of conversation, both these cars represent very different ends of the $30k-RWD-2 door spectrum.

Why buy boring and practical when you can buy something that makes you happy?

No, that's completely logical. Why use the money you've slaved away for to buy something that won't make you happy, even if it's more 'practical'? We're not machines. We need happiness and enjoyment in our lives and goddamnit, if being stuck on the freeway leaning into an engine bay full of lucas wire smoke will also allow for moments of quiet bliss carving up the canyons, then that's what I'm gonna do!

I don't buy it for what I'm planning to or going to do to it. I buy a car if I like it, can afford it, and can use it.

I am a strong proponent of the two car strategy, unless you are somebody who prefers to stay close to stock.

Well to clarify I meant something along the lines of: 2 seat roadster VS 2+2 GT.

Niether is really boring :)

My #1 and #2 criteria for buying a new car are tied. Do I enjoy looking at the car? Do I enjoy driving the car? #3 is capability can it do what I need/want it to do.

Unfortunately my next car is going to have to serve the family car role. The Pilot is a big lumbering gas guzzler, her Insight is just a terrible place to be ever all the time, and I don't think the 330Ci will baby very well, so now I'm stuck looking for a fun and nice 4-door under $30k, which means a GTI or...a GTI.

I have always been a fan of the 2+2 GT. They are almost always beautiful. Also I believe you live in Michigan right? Roadster wouldn't be as fun for like half the year.

I'm of the 'lightly modified' mindset. But either way the two car strategy is one I'd like to try out someday.

There are a LOT of options for $30k for 4 doors is you go lightly used though.

I would be OK with lightly used, but I like the security of having a manufacturer's warranty. Otherwise I'd probably get an older 530i with the sport package.

I'm sort of a whore with cars, but like G_Body_man, if I like something, can afford it, and can use it enough to justify ownership, I'll buy it. If I keep it long enough to do more with it, great, but I have a badly wandering eye so I rarely have a car for more than couple of years before something else strikes my fancy. Whatever I get does have to have some kind of back seat in case I need to put my kiddo in there, but that's about the only limiting factor, and it's not even that big a deal because I can always use my truck for that. Good to have a couple of running cars in any case.

If I had 30k to spend on a newish 2 door car, it'd be a Mustang, no questions asked.

I think most people buy way more car/truck than they need based on anticipation of requirements that never really materialize. For example, I think a lot of people get enormous trucks and SUVs because they may, one day, possibly, have to haul *something*. And then they figure, well I'm buying this truck and I have to use it every day, might as well make it nice, so you end up with a King Ranch or Denali or what-have-you. But you can borrow a friend's truck, or rent an in-town U-Haul, or worst case, go to Home Depot, buy 1 sheet of drywall, and rent their truck (I'm not actually advocating this, but I've seen it done).

When I bought my last car it was a necessity because my prior one was totaled. I was going to college, so all I really needed was cheap, reliable, and good fuel economy. I could have gotten away with spending a lot less on a beater, but I decided to buy new, with a warranty, to eliminate headache. I wanted some practicality - 4 doors, 4 seats, because that means flexibility to me. But I still wanted something at least quasi-fun so I went for the turbo engine and the 6 speed manual. I'd say overall it was a good compromise between need and want.

What I want to do and what I do with a car are exactly the same thing.

Disclosure: I've driven sporty cars and flown high performance aircraft. I've gotten the performance bug out of my system. Now I go for value/economy/practicality in my cars. It's cheaper just to rent a performance car from time to time.

I know, but at the same time I gotta try out roadster life at least once in my life. Which is why I hope the PHRT comes back …..

CPO cars come with warranties too though right? IMO a couple year old 3 series seems inline with your German interests.

But I already see a shit load of new Mustangs, hipster me wouldn't approve. To each their own I guess.

Indeed. You could always put some illest stickers on it and Plasti-dip the wheels turquoise or something. ;)

I was in a similar situation but couldn't go new because of …. well money and I wanted something not practical. Granted having a 11 year old Chrysler/Mercedes product means having a few bad days.

Kinja'd!!!

Having a warranty does sound reeeaaallllyyyy nice.

Also my mother is that exact truck buyer you described.

I'd like something a bit bigger than the 3-series though. Plus, turbowizardry doesn't align well with my shadetree mechanic skills.

When I bought my Civic coupe I wasn't thinking about what I really do with my car. I was thinking "wow that roof line looks so much better than the sedan's"

but I just sold said coupe so I can buy a wagon, because a wagon/5 door hatch, or even a sedan fits my life much better. plus I looove having cargo room.
