Tesla, maker of the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , is nearing an important victory in New Jersey. A bill allowing direct sales of Tesla cars has passed in the NJ House and Senate. Now the Fate of Tesla in NJ falls on Gov. Chris Christie's ample shoulders.
Last year, Tesla was forced to stop selling vehicles at two dealerships when the Motor Vehicle Commission ruled that the company's dealer licenses were improperly issued. As our infographic shows, Tesla is banned from selling cars directly to consumers in 25 states, not including New Jersey. We're just assuming that Gov. Christie is going to pass the bill rather than go against his legislature.
Georgia and Texas, among other states, are also pushing to legalize direct sales. At this point, Tesla has very limited sales, and !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . But this is changing, and soom Tesla will begin cutting into the profits of the big boys. If Tesla continues to gain traction and starts opening up dealerships around the country, you can expect manufacturers and dealers to put up a fight.

There are not enough people in Montana or Wyoming to bother selling luxury cars. I think there is a Mercedes dealer in Missoula. Maybe an audi dealer in Bozeman, that's about it. We pretty much drive Ford, Chevy, Honda, Toyota and Subaru.

I always like to use the analogy that if the anti-tesla law was applied all over, and you like buying beer from the brewery, that you could not anymore. You'd have to buy it from a party store or another bar. No longer can breweries operate their own bar. Want your computer spec'd out a certain way and order it straight from the manufacture? Too bad, you have to order a generic one from Best Buy and change it later

I know who's blocking Tesla's direct sales in Alabama: Serra, Townsend, McGough, Edwards, Burke, Treadwell, Barkley. These are some of the power brokers in the state. They also contribute heavily to both political parties to make sure they have a voice in the legislature. Tesla is going to have a big fight on its hands to get past these guys and set up a showroom anywhere in the state.

That is what it's like in Ontario. By law most beer is retailed by a belgian owned monopoly.
It literally is the dumbest system on the planet. I hate Telsa's in general, but I support freedom and thus their right to sell how they see fit.

There are a few states that I know of where brewers can't sell direct, it has to go through a distributor. Spirits too. Interestingly, one of those states is Florida, where you can buy a Tesla.

And here in Michigan there are a shitload of breweries that have their own bars where you can buy beer, but they banned direct sales of Teslas here. Crazy mess

Unfortunately, there's a lot of states like that. Pennsylvania, for example. Wine and spirits can only be sold by the state-run Fine Wine and Good Spirits monopoly (except that wine can be sold at wineries or at a limited number of off-premise stores wineries can get permission to open); while beer can only be sold at bars (6 packs) or larger beer distributors (24 packs). A recent law change is going to allow beer distributors to sell 12 packs, as long as the packaging comes that way from the brewery, so that's something.
