So I'm surfing the interwebs at work during my lunch, and Toyota/Scion slaps me in the face with this.

Kinja'd!!!

I'mdigging the color combination. Go pokes. But then something horribke happens. I look at the tab. And I see this...

Kinja'd!!!

High Performance Coupé. WTF... What do you mean "high performance"? Cause you lowered it? Added some useless aero? A center exit exhaust? I'm sorry, I forgot the black badges add 50+ HP. How silly of me. This is what's wrong with marketing. Someone please tell me how this is high performance! Toyota build a damn high performance sports car that ain't a Lexus. Toyota is one if the worst offenders of this " sports car crap". Bruh

I'm more appalled by the clutter that is your notification bar. Clean that mess up!

But yeah, high performance is a stretch. I remember when the TC first came out and was scooped up by the tuner crowd since it had/has a ridiculous aftermarket. Aren't they rated at 150hp ? Considering their performance model is 200hp it makes sense that Scion is trying to get more cred than they deserve.

Any car that has features described as "sporty" is almost certain not to be "high performance". Then again, low-performance coupe doesn't have the same ring to it.

The point is that orange is long considered the color of those loyal to crown of the King of England - the Protestants. Green is the color of nationalists - the Catholics. The Feast of St. Patrick is a Catholic holiday above all else in Ireland. What Sideways is alluding to is that Toyota is promoting the loyalist, Protestant ideas on a nationalist, Catholic holiday.

I'm sure I don't need to elaborate on the IRA and terrorism in Ireland.

While officially the Irish tricolor represents the Catholics (green), the Protestants (orange), and the hope for lasting peace between them (white); it is also understood that the flag is the Catholics and Protestants forever divided by the field of white.

From Wikipedia:

"The green pale in the flag symbolises Irish republicanism dating back to the Society of United Irishmen in the 1790s.

[11]

The orange represents the minority who were supporters of

King William III

, who was of the

House of Orange

and originally the

Stadtholder

of the

Netherlands

, had defeated

King James II

and his predominantly Irish Catholic army

[12]

at the

Battle of the Boyne

in 1690. His title came from the

Principality of Orange

in the south of France that had been a Protestant bastion from the 16th century. It was included in the Irish flag in an attempt to reconcile the

Orange Order

in Ireland with the Irish independence movement.

[ citation needed ]

The white in the centre signifies a lasting truce between the two cultures and a living together in peace.

[13]

The flag, as a whole, is intended to symbolise the inclusion and hoped-for union of the people of different traditions on the island of Ireland, which is expressed in the Constitution as the entitlement of every person born in Ireland to be part of the independent Irish nation, regardless of ethnic origin, religion or political conviction.

[14] [15]

There are exceptions to the general beneficent theory. Green was also used as the colour of such Irish bodies as the mainly-Protestant and non-sectarian Friendly Brothers of St. Patrick, established in 1751."

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

"Despite its original symbolism, in Northern Ireland the tricolour, along with most other markers of either British or Irish identity, has come to be a symbol of division. [39] The Ulster Unionist Party Government of Northern Ireland adopted the Ulster Banner (based on the flag of Ulster) in 1953. [42] Thus it is this flag and the Union Flag that are flown by unionists and loyalists , while the tricolour is flown by nationalists and republicans. [39] In Northern Ireland, each community uses its own flags, murals and other symbols to declare its allegiance and mark its territory, often in a manner that is deliberately provocative. [43] Kerb-stones in unionist and loyalist areas are often painted red, white and blue, [44] while in nationalist and republican areas kerb-stones may be painted green, white and orange, although this is a much less frequent occurrence. [45] Elements of both communities fly "their" flag from chimneys, tall buildings and lamp-posts on roads. [46]

Under the 1998 Belfast Agreement , it was recognised that flags continue to be a source of disagreement in Northern Ireland. The Agreement stated that:

All participants acknowledge the sensitivity of the use of symbols and emblems for public purposes, and the need in particular in creating the new institutions to ensure that such symbols and emblems are used in a manner which promotes mutual respect rather than division. [47]

Unionists argue that the recognition of the principle of consent in the Agreement — that Northern Ireland's constitutional status cannot change without a majority favouring it — by the signatories amounts to recognising that the Union Flag is the only legitimate official flag in Northern Ireland. [48] [49] [50] Nationalists maintain that the Agreement means that the use of the Union Flag for official purposes should be restricted, or that the tricolour should be flown alongside the British flag on government buildings. [51] However the tricolour is never flown from official buildings, alone or alongside the British flag. A Sinn Féin Lord Mayor of Belfast , Alex Maskey , displayed both flags in his own offices causing some controversy. [52] [53] "

The current tC is actually rated at 180 HP, IIRC. Still not "high performance", however.
