Went on a fun little road trip this weekend. First stopped at Kiptopeke state park in VA where they have constructed a huge breakwater with surplus concrete ships from WWII.

Kinja'd!!!

Then headed further south to Norfolk to tour the USS Wisconsin at the Nauticus museum. Most of the exhibits in the museum are not worth your time. There is however the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! which seems to be a separate entity sharing space with Nauticus. It is excellent and worth your time. I recommend going there and then paying for a tour of the Wisconsin.

Thought some people might appreciate this awesome model of a carrier strike group.

Next after the rain stopped we headed down to North Carolina to the Outter Banks. The Kitty Hawk museum was closed when we arrived but we woke up first thing to go get our over sand permit from the ranger station. This time of year it wasn't crowded at all and we lucked out on the weather. Driving on the sand was certainly fun and a good way to take in all the scenery. One slightly annoying thing is that the beach alternates between vehicle access areas and pedestrian only areas. This would be fine if they had ramps to get in and off the beach at each of these transitions, but they don't. I was bummed that I was only able to budget a day to explore the outer banks as there is way more to see and do.

The bad news is the truck didn't like the trip. The seal that keeps axle grease out of the birfield has completely let go and I need to do a axle rebuild ASAP. I also have a new strong vibration when accelerating between 40-45 MPH. this is not like a death wobble , but rather the entire car shaking only when you are on the accelerator. when you let off the vibrations stop.

Kinja'd!!!

Any ideas? I'm thinking sand ruined one of the drive shaft u-joints. Could it be in my tires, like a thrown wheel weight - I'm inclined to say no because the vibrations go away once you get off the gas?

They should make this into the best version of Battleship ever.

Since your birf is mixing up into the grey soup with the seal gone, I bet your vibration is your front diff not getting lubed properly, if it's not that check your front U joint, those can go fast. I just replaced both my driveshafts on my 80 last month after doing a rebuild on both axles last year, so much smoother down the road.

I really don't think it has to do with the front diff, there is still plenty of gear oil in there - I checked and kept it full as its leaking quite a bit - and the vibrations didn't start occurring until after I got off the sand. The only things I changed were airing down my tires and airing back up.

Is there any play in your front driveshaft? I got real scared and thought my transfer case was chewing itself up somehow with the weird vibes I was getting. Just turned out to be two bad U-joints. I'm by no means an expert, I have a guy that does most of my gritty work like this, but I had similar symptoms.

When my birf seal went I would get a crazy vibration only while braking downhill. My commute had a downhill stop I had to drive through every day that alerted me to it.

Front drive shaft is relatively new double cardan drive shaft from a lift 7 years ago. If anything I think it would be the rear drive shaft. I still have a sneaking suspicion that it might just be that a tire threw a wheel weight but I can explain why the vibrations stop when I let off the gas.

Where did you have to have a permit to drive on the beach? My family has had a house in Corolla for about 25 years now and we've always driven on the 4wd Beach (north of Corolla Light, where Rt12 ends) without any sort of permit or anything...Just wondering because I want to make sure I'm not breaking the law next time I'm up there.

I was driving on National park land down south mostly around Hatteras. Not sure how it works with the stuff further north, I'd check though, I imagine you need a permit everywhere.

That looks like fun, Sorry about needing an axle rebuild...but it happens. As for the vibes...i had a bad vibe with my front ujoints being toast, I still get a slight vibration but that's only since I regeared and so I chalk it up to that (since its at certain speeds only)

I don't think its my front shaft since its a slee double cardan that I installed with the lift. I think the rear one might have some bad joints. Did your vibes go away if you got off the gas?

Its been a while, but i want to say...yes? That having been said, getting your birfs back in working order first would be the obvious first move to diagnosing the problem.

really doubt its in the birfs. I noticed them spewing gear oil hundreds of miles before I hit the sand (and there was no vibrations). I'm fairly certain the sand affected something and the only thing that makes sense is the drive shaft (or I re-inflated my tires wrong). Ordering the c-dan kit today. Was really hoping to be able to push this off until I got back to my dads garage in CA, however, I will have to make do with my limited facilities that I have access to.

My old hometown! I grew up in Norfolk. Back in the late '80s, the city had a chance to host Jacques Cousteau's international oceanographic institute. The city passed and built the disaster that is Nauticus instead. Yes, the museum is excellent, but the rest of it is a waste. If you get back there, take a boat tour of the Naval Base. It's a great cruise down the Elizabeth River, and you get to see all the commercial shipping that goes on there, as well as the base.

We're planning a trip to the Outer Banks this fall to visit with family. Your post has me seriously considering driving instead of flying, so that I can explore the beaches.

I had a nasty vibration and it indeed was the rear drive shaft. Relatively cheap and easy thing to fix. Much easier than and axle rebuild!

Most of Nauticus is awful. The only redeeming parts (which made the visit totally worth it) were the Wisconsin herself and the Hampton Roads Naval museum which they should really point adults to when you arrive.

I'm pretty sure that the museum and Nauticus are separate entities that reside in the same building. I'm not sure the City has anything to do with the museum. Nauticus was, I believe, envisioned as more of an events center for downtown. I was living there when Waterside opened. It's getting pretty long in the tooth, and it's time for a complete resto of the whole waterfront.

Yeah, parts of the exhibits were closed upstairs because the roof was leaking. And yeah the Museum is run by the Navy, I wonder if you can go for free?

custom aluminum, welded it myself. I’ll have to do a post on it, although I never really took pictures while I was making it.
