One thing I love about owning a coupe/hatchback is the long ass doors. for two reasons
1 it's easier to get in and out of. and it's easier to jump though the window Nascar style, which is important.
2 the B pillar is behind my peripheral vision.
Also the are needed to get access to the rear seats.
Now car like the RX8, Ion, and Element have their fancy butterfly doors, that are supped to get more access to the rear seats. But I'd rather just have one long door. I never even thought about this until just now when searching CL for a RX8s and noticing how noticeably short the front doors are.
That said I still want one.

I used to have a saturn sc2 with the trick third door. Those were still some long ass doors though, I used to hit them on everything. Good thing they were plastic

the butterfly door on my current sc2 is pretty much the best thing about it. That and the gas milage

Long ass doors you say? They swing for days.
Mostly because the vert Stringbean shares the same general chassis as the Sedan. My door is at least 1.5x bigger than the Sedan's

Well, my favourite long doors is the one in Renault Avantime.
It's so long, but opens very tightly so it'll avoid door dings. And look at the window!

But it's harder to open long doors in tight parking spots!

you just have to go in through the window, or sunroof.

It's harder to open a long door to the same angle as a shorter door in the same parking spot, but why should that effect the clearance created when either door is banged snug against the neighboring car?

The only real problem I had with my RX8s doors was getting trapped between them when I had them both open in a tight spot, that being said, I still prefer them for two reasons. 1) they are super cool and girls love them (at least that's what I told myself) and 2) they honestly do make getting in the back seat easier, my brother has a MK5 rabbit 2 door and it was way easier to get people ( and random bulky stuff) in the back seat of the RX8
PS: you should totally get an RX8 I miss mine all the time

The potentiality for unitizing the cargo space in the rear is a valid argument for the funky doors.

You love long doors for the same reasons I despise them.
-Too long: Easily struck on adjacent vehicles and objects, and the opening being farther back requires a greater degree of opening for ingress and egress.
-Visibility: Yes, they can offer superior sideways visibility, but the rearward pillars block one's vision for rearward angles, especially backing up or changing lanes.
-Safety: With the pillars further back, there is less structure closer to the occupants to absorb impacts. Airbags also have to be larger, and while that may not make much if any difference, there is the possibility of it taking a few milliseconds longer to inflate.
-Weight: Bigger doors weigh more, and are more likely to get out of control and strike something nearby, as mentioned above. They can be harder to close and/or open on inclines, depending on which direction the vehicle is parked.
-Alternate ingress/egress points (windows/sunroof): great way to mess up the paint and cause injury.
I love the RX-8's setup with the four coach-style doors. I'd love it if other 2+2 coupes went to a similar setup, even though for such vehicles - Mustangs, Camaro, G37 coupes, etc. - it would probably cause an epileptic shock among the faithful.
