I just got included on an email thread that had been bouncing between some of our web developers about our fucking web site being borked. If they had bothered to include me in the conversation I could have reverted to a backup hours ago. It's a good thing we're a small company and our site doesn't get a shit load of traffic.

I recently upgraded our print server, so all the printer mapping that the users had wouldn't work. I wrote up what one person called, "Army Proof", directions on what to do so they could print again.
I'm still getting people asking why they can't print.
Me: "Did you read my e-mail?"
User: "Uhhhhhhh..."

"What is an email?"
"It's like a text message from your computer to mine."
"Oh you mean a 'double envelope'? I call it that because that is what the link looks like. Can you just like you know, make computer works for mes?"

Lol, yeah I used this at a previous job, but my current one has certain restrictions and limitations, I have to use MS Lync to get to myu remote users who have often literally never been to the office and never will

emo-sigh.
Such is life. BTW, do you get those assholes who keep asking you about that shitty SNL sketch "Nick Burns: Your Company's Computer Guy"?
Me: "Oh yeah! That's a pretty funny sketch." (fuckyoufuckyoufuckyoudieinpigrotshitforbrainsloser)

As someone who has done my share of tech support, I say this is an accurate description of most end users.

All hail the holy mute button on Cisco VoIP phones. And the "awesome" part is I am not the tech support guy, I'm the sys admin, but do to cutbacks I am the only IT guy besides my business analyst director of IT

worked customer service and tech support for Alltel and retail for Verizon. this was when everyone was getting a cell phone then when the tweens thought it was a good idea to convince mom and dad to get their 80 year old grandmother an iPhone. If the microwave is too complex to operate and you still use a VCR .. you don't need an iPhone!
The worst part was working in retail I'd have to deal with the scum of the earth and appear happy and excited to help them.
Now I work alone in Field IT

sounds like you made lifer harder on your self. After updating the print server why not just setup a script to remap them at sign in. an extra min of work would have halted all head aches.

There is technical incompetence and then there is technical laziness, today's episode was the latter.

Any other network, I probably would have, but we have enough issues with our drive mapping script that I didn't think it was worth it. Also, we're a bunch of Comm guys, you'd think they could follow simple instructions with pictures.

I understand it can be frustrating. I deal with technical laziness all the time in the IT dept for a Community College. I just spent 15 mins trying to explain how to open a new tab in Firefox over the phone.

Oh god I had to do this today with someone. "I can't get to the file server, it's not working" (checks VPN logins...) "Are you connected to the VPN?" "Yes" "Can I see your desktop?" (views desktop) "I don't see the VPN connection. Let's go here..." (helps user figure out forgotten VPN password, etc)
This after the user hasn't checked in in months, and unloads on me yesterday with a whole bunch of problems, of which I fixed ALL of them. And I leave with "Please let me know if you are having problems with something as soon as you are having the problems..."
I'd much rather be driving a car than a computer... but here I am helping you out with your computer instead, so let me help you! All you have to do is ask!
(BTW GoToAssist totally rocks for remote user support - "OK, wait a sec while I take over your desktop...")

I finally started pushing printers out to computers on our network because nobody would read my emails. I _think_ I can shut down the old print server now... 4 months later...

Yeah I do love the logmeins and gotoassist but unfortunately the budget does not permit purchasing licensing for our large remote user field

Yeah it can get pretty pricey. We are a smaller company (50-ish) and bundled it with GoToMeeting and Sharefile, so it works out pretty well price wise.
