I witnessed a spectacular drag race between an early 90's Camaro
and a 2015? Camaro SS
These guys sparred back and forth for at least 4 or 5 traffic lights with no way to really contest each other because of the traffic.
I figured the new SS would walk all over the older car anyway. Eventually, they wound up at a light at the front of the line together. I was about 3 cars back. They took off and I was totally blown away. That older Camaro stayed neck and neck with the new SS until they let off. I'm sure the old Camaro was not stock, but it was fricking amazing to watch. The new Camaro did a U-turn at the next light an left. I was totally blown away, as I'm sure the driver of the new SS was too . Saturday afternoon fun. Life is good.

That gen Camaro (with the V8 of course) is nothing to shake a stick at. Look at them less as a Camaro and more as a Corvette with a back seat.

Street racing is bad blah blah blah. These guys are scrum, and should have there cars taken away blah blah blah.

Must be. Didn't they have they the 305 in them? With the GM "emissions package"?

Yeah, I don't condone street racing. But it happens. And this was a perfect road for it to happen on. Few problems to crop up. This was the same road I saw a C6 Corvette (Z06?) and a Ford GT race on last fall. Love that road.

Depends. The SS package had the 5.7 Liter, same as the Trans Am WS6. And, as we all know, those engines can be modified very nicely, and very discreetly.

Did not see any SS badging on the early Camaro. But that does not mean it was not or modified. It was in beautiful condition, though. All black. Only problem was they had a mild tint on the taillights. Me no like taillight tint.

Pretty sure it was either 3.4 or 5.7 only, for that generation.

4th gen F bodies are pretty capable machines. If it was early 90's it would be an LT1, even basic things like an intake and exhaust can give it a modest power boost. Its down about 500lbs depending on options and if it had anything like a cam or any extensive tuning it could be pretty comparable in power. This is an engine that will see measurable gains from installing a small throttle body air foil.

I'm actually ok with a random light to light race. I think some folk here blow things out of proportion a bit.
Trailering in your 1500bhp monster and racing on highways. Not such a good idea.

4thgen f bodies are lighter, have a better suspension, and are still ls powered after 1999 or so. Dont buy into the irs hype ....much easier to go fast in a 4thgen.

It was a very clean and well loved car by the looks of it. I would assume it was not stock. I just would have loved to seen the look on the face of the guy in the new SS as he realized he was not beating that "old Camaro".

'93-'97 was the LT1 5.7, '98-'02 was the mighty LS1 5.7.

Wish I had been able to identify the exact year of that car.
