after a few months of sitting, my '93 325i won't start. Not a dead battery, it cranks fine, but it just wont start. On top of that, I find out that the PO removed the fucking check engine light in the cluster so I have to replace that to even read trouble codes.... I checked the fuel pump relay, and fuse. At this point it could be the pump itself, something to do with spark, or a sensor(CPS seems to be common). Anyone had a similar sounding issue? I am going to try to fix it this weekend, or at least diagnose it. Ideas?
sweet e36 for your time.

Start by seeing if you have spark. If it's not that, you're not getting gas.

I am thinking its gas related because I'm not getting a strong gas smell after cranking for a while, but I will check spark.

Does yours have that onboard computer with the code that turns off the fuel injectors? I used to always forget I ha put the code in, and would sit there thinking the car was broken until I realized the comp was asking me for the code.

I have no idea if it's legit or just superstition, but my next move in that situation is often to wiggle every spark plug wire connection, both at the plug and at the dizzy. (Does an e36 have a distributor?) Works about 70% of the time.

they are coilpack on plug.

it isnt a carb engine, so you wouldnt get that gas smell very strong. Can you hear the pump come on? If not replace that light and crank it to throw a code and read it. Be really weird if a crank sensor just went south from sitting. It isnt a SAAB

Is yours fitted with an aftermarket alarm? Mine wouldn't start if that tripped. Had to reset it then it would flick on fine :)

thats my plan today is replacing the light to try to read a code first. I may as well let the computer do it's job.

if it is a crank sensor, oddly enough sometimes it will not throw a code. Esp on OBD1

I have never had to enter a code before. Any idea how I would know if it is? It doesn't say anything to that effect on the screen.

crank position sensor? mine went bad, if you have no fuel or spark, it's because the ecu doesn't know the motor is turning over....

you're killing me. Well if all else fails I will just replace it, I found one cheap on amazon.

I am getting a suspicion that it is what it is. Last year, it would also run weird after it rained. Maybe it was going out. (I checked the ECU box, no water there).

It will say "code" on the screen. It's an old school anti theft device. If you never put one in than that's not it.

yeah, it never needed it, or has ever said code on the screen.

no code.. damn. I have to get out the oscilloscope and start testing things.

damn, it could be that crank sensor. You can test that without an oscilloscope, but hey, if ya got one... is 93 direct ignition or does that still use a dizzy?

Its a good chance to use my pocket scope. I'm an EE, I have all the electrical toys. I also happen to work for the company that makes the sensor.
It has direct ignition. Coil on plug. I cant imagine they are all out. Also, I took a gander in the ECU compartment, and it was nice and dry.
