So. Here's the question. one thousand dollars. what can you get for one thousand dollars? An old cavalier? maybe a 1982 corolla? Well, if you're my friend Isaac, it gets you a relatively low mileage, open diff, 1991, 1.6, 5-speed, Mazda Miata MX-5.
Yep. $1000, plus $300 in parts, and my fried now has an NA Miata, and he let me drive it. This was my first time driving an NA Miata, and it was the bad one to drive (1.6, open diff)
Here's the thing though. I loved it. I adored it and now, I get it. I get the Miata love. this thing is perfect. it made me smile. It's the best $1000 car I've ever seen. period!
Here's to Miata, and to the love of motorsports!
(yes, it's missing a dash, but that was purchased today. it'll be fixed tomorrow morning.)

In Japan you can get an NB in quite decent condition, 1.8 with LSD for cheaper than that... Crazy really...
This one for exemple is priced at about 900$ (1900$ with the insurance + license + shaken)

Miata is always the answer. You're on a Jalopnik blog, you should know this.

I picked up Charlie for that much. I was looking at some Miatas as well, but the AW11 won out.

I once bought a... 1992? Maybe, GMC Sonoma for 300$ it was a 2WD with an auto.. and the auto was mostly smoked. none the less it came with the ORIGINAL window decal witch I've never had before. Also only had 80K miles. Ended up giving it to a friend when we totaled his truck, then he blew the transmission up and scraped it. Also, i picked up a 1987 camaro Z28, running, driving, leaking anti-freeze, but still, for 300$ . ended up selling that to the same friend i gave the Sonoma to. If you look around, under 1000$ can get you a real fun toy if your not being picky. Oh this all happened in the last 12 months by the way.

They're around. You're not going to get a nice looking one for that, but if you know what to look for, you can get a nicely driving one. Mine was in bumfuck Central Florida and had quite a bit of rust, but nothing structural. Engine was rock solid, suspension needed some work, but that was going to be replaced anyway. Realistically, I could have driven the thing from that day until now without having to put a penny into it.
