I was about to help my co-worker do an oil change when there was a loud bang.
The cable on the lift snapped
Thats at Silverado 2500
Sitting on one lock
The other side was starting to lower under the weight.
No one was under or around the truck at the time so if it did fall no one would have gotten hurt. After calling the manufacturer we got it lifted up on the lock and got some jack stands underneath.

Thank goodness your levitating cat powers were available to keep things under control.
A bit strange that you need a continuous stream of fresh PB&J sandwiches to use your powers...but whatever. I'm not going ask questions. You saved lives today. that's all that matters.

Damn, glad that got sorted out.

I've had one of the hoist's telescopic legs slip out from the truck's frame once while I was underneath the truck. Imagine a F350 crew cab diesel dually swinging around above you, dangling on two or three legs.

I keep trying to imagine it, but all I see is this.

I would "nope nope nope" out of there.

I never knew my cat powers where this powerful...I should use them more.

is that just the cable for the safety latches?

Yikes. Scary when a cable lets go. Nice quick work stabilizing it, could have been worse.

I've done that with a crashed Subaru Legacy at the salvage yard when I worked there. I was under the car for ten minutes before I realized that the one leg, while under the car, didn't actually have the car sitting on it.

It's probably due to the ugly wheels on the truck. Are the lifts Rotary?
![]() 03/12/2015 at 21:04 |
|
There not but I forgot the brand, the funny thing is that a rotary lift was just installed beside this one.

Ah I see. They looked like the Rotary lifts we have at work. Must be the blue and yellow.

Oh for sure, our supevisor makes us put a jack stand under the rear dif of trucks and vans because of somthing like this.

Lol lift manufacturers like blue and yellow.

It's not for the latches but I think it's there to support weight the hydraulics so that when you lower the vehicle it doesn't just drop.

I was working in a garage one summer. Accross the lot was a Midas Muffler shop. Loud bang. Guy wiggled the shifter Linkage on a car that was running on a drive on Lift. One reverse selection later, the car was halfway through the garage door...

Yes. The guy was a bit of a wanker. He used to come over and was the fastest, bestest, toughest, everythingest person on the planet.

Ford wasn't a fan of making their trucks stable on lifts for a while. Just look at the frames on the round 150's and the exploders with frames.
When I was working in a shop we had a mountaineer get dropped because of the shitty frame design.

hopefully owner of said vehicle was not in a rush.

We used a ladder to get his stuff out then gave him a rental car.

What does the cable do? I thought every lift had mechanical locks — the bangs you hear as it lifts are the arms passing one-way latches, so that you always have a fail-safe if the hydraulic mechanism fails.

To be honest I really don't know, but I was told that the lift couldn't work properly/safely with out it. I think there for support along with the locks.
