I just paid off the last of my student loans!

I graduated school with more than just a degree. I graduated with enough student loans to buy a nice house in parts of this country. Damn near $80K in student loans. It made my life a misery for more years than I care to think about, especially after I first graduated and didn't have a deent paying job. I don't regret it, because the degree has changed my life in more ways than I ever thought possible when I started out. But paying all of that back has sucked beyond belief.....Whew!

Kinja'd!!!

Time to get those credit cards taken care of next!

80K is cheap these days. Good freaking job on paying it back. I sweated my ass off for a year and banked 26 grand (well, more than that). Wrote those motherfucking leeches a check for the full amount and was out from under them

Congrats. It's freeing, no?

Mortgage is the only debt I carry...I'm working on getting rid of that ASAP. When I got married my wedding gift to my wife was paying off her student loans (but it was really for myself so I wouldn't have the slimy debt feeling all over me :P)

I know, and I have a daughter that will be starting college in another 6 years. and a son 3 years after that. If they aren't looking to get a specialized degree (engineering/computer science/pre-med etc) I'm going to point both of them straight at a trade school.

I'm $644 bucks away from having no more student loan. I could pay it off in one shot but since I'm now just paying pennies a month in interest I'll just ride it out for the next 3 months and be done with it.

I focused on paying off the credit cards first. and I now have ZERO balance on my card.

My only debt is my mortgage and my car payment(the car payment is next on the list).

Being free of unnecessary debt is the best thing to ever happen to me.

solid plan. I am hoping the expectation of a traditional college degree is dead by the time my daughters are there

Congrats. I've been out four years and I'm still chugging away on mine...fortunately I only owe money for grad school, otherwise I'd be *really* broke.

I should have my student loans and car loan paid off by the end of the year. Not bad for graduating only 4 years ago.

I think it will be there, for our kids generation it is pretty much the same as a high school diploma was for our generation. It's expected or else you don't get anything close to a decent job.

I'm still 5-6 years out if I continue paying minimums, which I really need to get a better job not to continue doing.

Oh my GODDDDDDDDD you lucky bastard! Congratulations! I dream of the day that I, too, can be counted among the unshackled, free and productive members of society.

$152k for me upon graduation (from law school). Ain't that a bitch? I've made a lot of progress and could be done with them in short order if I sold the M3 but, hey, a guy deserves to have SOME pleasure in life, right?

International Business and Japanese. Neither of which resulted in a job. That probably had to more to do with the recession that was going on when I graduated than that. no one got jobs after graduating back then. My interest in computers, programming and writing skills (believe it or not) have been what kept me employed all these years.

The best advice I can give you, since it isn't debt that can be bankrupted out of, is don't run up additional debts on credit cards (or whatever) and just put as much to them as you can afford to pay.

I finish university next year and I'm looking at owing $16k in loans, which isn't terrible. $300 a month for six years is something I'm not going to look forward to, and basically any extra cash is going to go into getting rid of that loan.

For me, I'll end up paying 3.5% on it, according to the OSAP calculator, which also says that it'll take me 72 months to pay off my loan at $268 a month.
