Forensics Time, Boys and Girls! Our Asshat !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! was rockin' an average 58 MPH in a 30 MPH residential zone in Malibu before he nearly traveled his last 50 meters on his shit-stained, leather-clad ass. Here's how we know, thanks to Google Earth and a bit of iMovie magic: From the "start" point (where the right shoulder pavement changes color and width), right near the Backbone trail crossing, to the "endpoint " (last utility pole on the right, just before spontaneous defecation), Asshat and Atom traveled 212 meters in 8.15 seconds. That's 26.01 m/s, or a smidge over 58 mph. That's almost double the limit, and on blind corners to boot. So, IMAGINE HIS SURPRISE when a stationary object in the road almost didn't get avoided, 'cause, you know, PHYSICS!
I put this little exercise together to put a verifiable average speed on what are normally very difficult-to-judge speeds taken with wide-angle action cameras. I won't quibble if you get slightly different results; but no matter what you'll likely conclude he was doing the better part of 60 over his final 10 seconds before the mandatory underwear change.
BUT WAIT! IT GETS BETTER! Stopping distance is not a linear function of speed. Oh, no, bug breath: Your "danger zone" (thanks, Archer!) projects in front of you as !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! (mechanical factors, brake performance, fade, reaction times play a role as well). But the base physics are clear: If you're going 60, you're carrying 4X the energy of 30, and the increase in braking distance is the square of the increase in speed. Put another way, your stopping distance shrinks far more dramatically than your speed: You only need ONE QUARTER the stopping distance from 30 that you need from 60 (not half).
Thanks to !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! for providing the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
You can play with the video to get your own results, but here's my map, using verifiable landmarks from the video:
EDIT: Just Uploaded the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Note that YouTube up-rounds; the video is closer to 8 sec; but definitely more than 8.0, so total length shows 9 sec. At least you can see what I used for start-stop markers on the road, and compare to the map, and of course draw your own conclusions. I ran it a few times (map length and video length), got them over 60 mph at one point, but used a lower speed-exercise to give them benefit of the doubt.
UPDATE: 3/13/15; 12:57 EDT: Some folks claim that the corner is blind, but Pigsty points out from the area that it's really not, and in any case visually exacerbated by the Atom's low camera mount. Works for me. Still, I thought it would be useful to calculate the minimum sight distance at the corner in question: it's about 120 feet. Or far more than some are claiming — "He would have hit that BMW even at the legal limit!" Well, yes, if you've fallen asleep. But even your granny could stop safely at legal speeds wearing her orthopedics, or even if driving a bit faster than legal. Go, granny, go. Map below of Brown Pants Curve.

I got your F****** video right here, pal! :-)
It's a "subset" of the original video. Note: In YouTube world, they round up to the next whole second; it's actually closer to 8 sec., but more than 8.0 for sure.

Thank you for this!

That's probably more accurate than the post-it note calculation method I was using.

Well, you know how it is: There is no internet fact too minute to go unchallenged by a group of experts; the smaller the fact, the greater the number of experts. :-) And I would never doubt the power of the Post-It note!

Thank you. Thank you for providing data to asshats who think driving that speed amidst homes, trailheads and cyclists is anything but a deep well of stupid.

"deep well of stupid" I like it; that one is going into my bag of Internet arrows.

I measured it the same way from telegraph pole to telegraph pole, and got 54mph rounding the final corner.

Works for me! They actually did slow a bit just before the blind "BMW Corner." Really hauling the mail at the first part of the video; probably closer to 70, but really tough to verify.

Well I can't knock the method and effort you put into this haha. Good job

A clear case of too much free time on a Thursday.
