Yeah I'm torn here. If he really punched a coworker over food, fuck that guy. He deserves to be canned.
If it's been blown way out of proportion, or if it was under some other circumstance, then the BBC needs to add some info to the conversation.

I'd be too embarrassed to admit it if Jeremy Clarkson threw a punch at me and didn't end up on his fat ass, and if he did end up on his fat ass, then it's all good. Just saying.

Oh, but think of the children! He's done so much good work for them...

There's a petition online to have Jeremy Clarkson reinstated . First of all, it's kind of pointless, because the BBC already knows how popular he is and how unpopular the decision to sack him would be. But secondly, if you sign it, just think about the message you're sending out: 'If you're famous enough or successful enough you can do whatever the hell you want and get away with it.' Yeah, I don't really want to be a part of that.
I think that article is spot on, especially the above bit. I don't watch Top Gear religiously but I do enjoy it, and Clarkson cracks me up to no end. But they are absolutely right... if I punched one of my coworkers I'd be fired on the spot, which is a shame because there are a few who I'd love to punch. But if I can't do it, Clarkson can't either.
I think it's funny, people bitch about the 1% and celebrities and all this, and how they do whatever they want and live by a different set of laws, but when they actually do fuck up, no one wants to see them held accountable. "Oh, they made a mistake" "They deserve a second chance" I'm pretty sure you and I wouldn't get a second chance if we punched a co-worker in the face. So for what it's worth, I'm not signing the petition.
But I am hoping the "farcas" is a "farce" and we're going to see a sexy 3some with a Ferrari, Porsche, and McLaren after the ruse is up.

I find this interesting that people are so offended that he swung and missed at a coworker. At my job people have flat out brawled with each other and both still have their jobs. Granted they no longer work directly with each other, but nobody got fired over it.

I agree with every word of this comment, myself.

Do you work in construction, or a machine shop, or something like that?

I brought this same point up a couple of days ago as a comment, and I got a couple of NFL-esque, "But you wouldn't fire and employee if they are that big of a cash cow!" responses. If an employee is that much of a liability, especially with past skirmishes, at some point they are going to cut their losses and move on.

Ha, no. White collar, although we have a machine shop. Just a lot of egos.

this is a case of an entitled douchebag losing his temper
If the facts are what are being reported then it's hard to argue with that. I don't care who you are, if you punch a coworker for anything other than self defense you should be fired.

As a Production Manager of television commercials, If I forgot to feed the crew...I'd expect to get punched by somebody...Forgetting the food is a worse offense than forgetting the camera...
(Half-joking here...I'd love to know the whole story...)

Well the reason I asked about your type of employment is because I think for a lot of people, especially white collar types, are really surprised by that behavior because it absolutely doesn't fly in 99.9% of offices.
However, I spent years in the construction industry working for my dad and I know they take much more lax views on that kind of stuff. I've seen 2 carpenters beat the piss out of one another with roofing hammers. It wasn't pretty. Hell, my dad and I almost got into a fist fight on a job (that's what happens when you have electricians trying to hang drywall, but that's another story).

We're a special breed in the midwest. Everything is blue collar, even our white collar jobs.
