Is it true that the 04-05 STi's are considered the most dangerous?

Just because of the sheer power, and the sanity you need to skillfully drive them?

Not if you have a Cobb shifter. Then you are safe as can be.

Carry a helmet and some holy water, and you'll be fine.

I didn't know they were that bad?

its most dangerous because bugeye enthusiasts hate the hawkeye most, also tetanus.

I'd hardly call 300HP dangerous.

4WD + 300hp does not really equals dangerous... Tell me about a 1992 Viper being "tricky", then yes, I'd understand... But a Subaru...

Nah, from my experience they're pretty easy to control, though I haven't spent a ton of time in one. Still ~300hp and AWD is pretty manageable with good tires. Now the TT 300ZX with mods putting down ~450 to the wheels? That one took effort to not spin in the rain, even with such a neutral chassis as the Z has, with summer performance tires and a really early grabbing, touchy clutch, it was a handful in the wet.

Easiest to break into and bust a wheel bearing

I've driven an '15 STI, not dangerous at all.

Do they? Cause I loved my bugeye, but I love the Alfa designed hawkeye even more!

Unless you mean the peanut eye. That thing was fugly.

Jeez, when was that story published? That was in my early days reading Jalopnik.

If you think an AWD Subaru is "dangerous" to drive, I'd pay money to see you drive something mid-rear or rear-rear.

Yep, I started reading Jalopnik around late 2010. Weird

04/5 is blobeye.

They're better than 02/3. Not too scary, like any Subaru... When it doubt, pin it out. If approaching corner and not steering, add power. You'll come out of it.

I successfully rolled a GD body impreza (02-07) over 10times down a major freeway in my younger days, and lived to tell the story. They're structurally very very safe.

04/5 is also a bit of a split in the body style. 04 is rather stripped, and more of an 02/3 Wrx with go fast bits added (6mt, 2.5L, larger turbo, bigger TMIC, funky steering wheel). 05 saw a radio get added from the factory, rear fender "flares" that carry into the bumper, normal style steering wheel, 5x114.3 rolling stock.. Things of this nature, refinements if you will.

Dccd is fun, the dccdpro controller makes everything better...

Lived/loved this world for over a decade. Built many Subaru monsters. Wouldn't call any of the GC/GD Imprezas "scary", they're fool proof.

Wrong. R180 hubs don't have that issue. R160... Different story (non STi)

I remember before Jalopnik was started. New car stuff would get posted to gizmodo sometimes. I remember the post announcing the creation of Jalopnik. I was so excited.

I can imagine it was an exciting time. I was a huge gadget nerd before I could drive (2010), so I just read gizmodo, tuaw, engadget, stuff like that. Now I couldn't care less about that crap. Funny how things change.

I've always been big on cars because I come from a car family but there wasn't much around for free/timely until sites like jalopnik started popping up.

Giz, Engadget, and kotaku were my primaries. IGN, gametrailers, and a few others were secondaries.

These days it's mostly oppo because it's like hanging out with friends. Almost all through my phone. If I'm on my MBA I'm either doing work or gaming.

I know what you mean about Oppo. Ever since I started coming here I hardly ever visit the FP. Maybe once or twice a day. It's nice being able to talk to people and know the posters, and I don't really enjoy being just one of hundreds of voices in the comments on an FP post.

LOL. You're really showing that you don't know anything about these cars. The 04-05 cars in particular, had very little in the way of technical assistance for the driver. Along with 300hp, they were the harder ones to drive in acclimate weather.

Kinja'd!!! 404 Name Not Found > Aaron Brown

There something about not having enough driver assist aids in the 04-05 cars

Such hostility.

Dangerously understeery maybe. Seriously, a stock STi is not difficult to drive. I mean if you're talking a tuned one with a bazillion horsepower, sure, but stock? It's a very fast car but I wouldn't call them dangerously hard to drive by any means. AWD is pretty forgiving and can make up for a lot of skill deficit just by it's nature.

And judging by ALL of the other replies in this thread I'd venture to say that there is a decent possibility that you are the one that doesn't know these cars that well. Or if you do, it's the ONLY car you know about, since everyone else seems to agree with me.

not to mention that the FP people seem to think that if a car doesn't have at least 500 hp, weigh 1500 lbs, 0-60 of under 3 seconds, simultaneously be a shooting brake/wagon/coupe, RWD, manual, diesel, and be able to run the 'Ring in under 5 minutes it's a piece of shit and you're a piece of shit for liking it.

I suspect most can't/don't drive. Or their just mad they're forced to drive their grandparents hand me down 1992 auto civic with 200k on the clock because they're in high school and don't know what money means.

Don't joke about Subarus and flat billed hats. One guy (burner account probably) said "when I see curved bills on hats I think of dumb red neck Midwesterners who dropped out of high school" or something to that effect insinuating that I was said type of person. I left him in the grey because I don't feed trolls. I'm actually a college educated business owner from the south. And it was just because I said I didn't like flat billed hats. Not insulted the hats or people. Just that I don't like them.

If you can't handle 300HP without driver assists other than ABS......you might want to take a driver control course.
