"Topsy" appears rather turvy. Also, he's walking away, hence good landing by definition.

Takes a lot to bring a Jug down. Probably brushed it off and sent it back out.

Strange that there's not more prop deformation than this—makes me think the engine wasn't running when it was dropped on its belly.

I was thinking something along the same lines. I've got a book that I swiped from my father's library when I was a child about the Thunderbolt (I think that might be the title). It was an awesome collection of one guy's time as a Thunderbolt pilot. I feel like all of those guys walked like the man in this photo.

From the stories I read as a child about these planes, you are probably right.

It always blows my mind to think that most of these were flown by kids who were only about 22 or so

This guy is from Luverne Minnesota, they named their airport after him. There is a documentary on Netflix called The War and he is one of the main soldiers they talk about through the 8 episodes. If you like WWII doc's you defiantly have to check it out!

Worth a read. My initial take that he was a BOSS is correct.

Ya the story behind that picture is that he was coming back from a raid and one of his wheels was flat from shrapnel, he didn't know at the time and he landed with one flat tire and crashed it when he landed. This picture was taken literally right when he was getting out of the plane after he was knocked out from the crash.
