I liked Torch's idea for a cab-over SUV the other day. It seems like my perfect vehicle.

M1078/79
I actually discovered these because I want to build an expedition vehicle, and was interested in using a Mitsu Fuso 4x4, but they are rare, expensive, in the US. Then I stumbled on to these bad boys, about the same time as the military Hummer sales started. You can pick one up for around $10k. It's got full time AWD, Cat turbo diesel, 6 speed automatic, and central tire inflation.

Interestingly, this manifestation of Mitsubishi is owned by Mercedes.

Why not? If you can register a Deuce and a half, I don't see why you can't register these? And I see them going in convoys down the road from time to time.

I actually looked into it, these are not for sale to be registered as road going vehicles; "for off road use only" and as far as convoys...who's going to stop the army? The police? Seriously though, the military can use them on the road, but the public cannot.

Lol, I was just coming here to post this. It's actually owned by Daimler (which owns Merc) and is the Japanese division of the Daimler Trucks group. I work for Daimler Trucks North America so they are familiar colleagues to me.
Another interesting thing is that the Daimler Trucks group has been slowly stripping the Mitsubishi nomenclature and badging from the trucks. The goal is to push the FUSO brand.

well, thanks for ruining my year :(
I knew they were making damn sure the public couldn't register the Humvees that are up for sale. But why this? I mean, its no different than a deuce and a half. That sucks.

I did a quick google. It appears some guys over on Steel Soldiers have registered them. The one that I saw was in Michigan, and I have heard if a thing moves under its own power and has headlights/brake lights/turn signals they will register it up there. So maybe theres hope...

Michigan? Maybe. at the auction they just had here in Utah they were crystal clear on your chances of getting it registered.

Looks like the guys from Steel Soldiers bought theirs from Gov Planet, same place thats selling the Humvees. I know on the Hummers the DoD requires a statement of intended use before they turn over the keys, which expressly forbids registering it for use on public roads, but I didnt see anything about that for the 1078s. Maybe its a Utah thing? I'll do some more digging.
