!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! is one of the worst behaviors on the road. Don’t do it.

If someone follows your bumper too closely for comfort, don’t touch your brakes; instead, let off your accelerator a touch to slow your car, by <1 mph.

The driver of the trailing car with quickly need to hit their brakes to avoid a collision. And they’ll, if they have any awareness at all, adjust to a more suitable follow-distance.

It’s traffic Inception: they get off your rear-end, averting a collision; and you don’t feed into their provocation. Win-Win.

If you would like to pass someone — safely — communicate that: give them a quick, double-flash of your high beams as you’re approaching.

Washing your windshield is even more effective. If your pusher fluid gets on their screen, it should become quite obvious to them that they are way too close.

So, its probably not cool of me to downshift into second and dump the clutch without warning?

I prefer the above method as it shows the driver in spatial terms.

Still, windshield washing is definitely in the playbook.

Haha! No, it's a total dick move, and I rarely ever do it, but I will admit to having done it before.

But the proper response, in the end, is probably just to let the guy pass, if you can. People know when they're too close, and they're too close because they don't care what you think. You could stand your ground and "give them a reminder", or just take the Zen route and let the asshole go be an asshole to someone else.

i really hate it when I'm at a red light and people get right up behind me so that all i can see is grill. I usually let it roll backwards a few inches just to make them pucker

I've always gone with the pedal to the floor fuck this bullshit approach. If they accelerate with me, I just change lanes. If the change lanes with me, then it's time to be an ass. What that constitutes depends on my mood.

I've found that ever so lightly resting my left foot on the brake, such that the lights come on and stay on, all the while maintaining speed with my right foot is a good way to get them to back off. Yeah, not the greatest thing to do for your car. I happen to have a pickup with a topper and I can see the center high mount in my rear-view mirror so can tell just how heavy of a touch the pedal needs to turn them on.

I definitely do this while intently staring at them in my rear view.

But they don't want to pass. They just want to be an asshole.

Sometimes, yes.

And those times, I use my 2nd-gear drop and some light swerve action on the steering wheel to get their attention. Usually when they see a car suddenly slow down, ass-end pitched up int he air without warning, and swerving from side to side, they tend to lock up their brakes pretty quickly.
