Out of all possibilities for a first car, I chose the 2011 Challenger R/T.
Why? It has all the style and looks of a classic with none of the drawbacks. Vintage cars are cool but they lack in reliability and especially safety. Look up "1959 Biscayne crash test vs Malibu"
Other cars, and why I chose the Chally over them
2011-2014 Mustang GT - too common
2010-2013 Camaro SS - too common
2011-2014 Charger R/T - too common.
2007 Jaguar XK - repairs too expensive
1997 Hummer H1 - it's a diesel-holic
2008-2012 Audi S5 - slightly too expensive, not unique enough
C6 Corvette - scrapes on a leaf, only 2 seats
1998-2002 Firebird Formula/TA - already one at school
'57 T-Bird, '65 Mustang, '57 Caddy, '68 Camaro, '79 Trans Am, '71 Riviera - reasons mentioned earlier. I visited a Dodge dealer this weekend and was told that the most important feature for a first car is ESC.
Prius - lol jk
V6 muscle cars - Well, I don't care about speed, as long as its <9 seconds to 60. I only choose the V8 for the sound, and I pay the price with increased crash risk and fuel consumption.
Back to the Challenger: There are thousands of them out there, it's good that I have some time to search. Forget $30,000, they can easily be found for $20,000-$23,000

Neat. Those have the most style of the 3 pony cars out right now IMO. Enjoy!

Interesting choice. Does anybody else on Oppo have one of these?
I remember some guy at my high school had a ridiculous one with lambo doors and underglow. Please don't be that guy.
Also, regarding what the Dodge dealer told you, I would respectfully disagree. IMO best features on a first car are cheapness so that if you mess up it doesn't hurt you in the wallet, and an airbag so if you really mess up it doesn't kill you. That's just me though. Still disqualifies all the classics : /

That wasn't his own statement, he read an article saying that. Also, ESC contributes much to prevent crashes, where airbags and wallets are needed. Seat belts are mentioned below as well.

Ah the Dodge Challenger. I actually wanted one of these as my first car, but my tightwad dad in his words, "Didn't want to pay over 10k for my first car." But if I get the cash, I'm definitely thinking of this as a second or third car. A man can dream.

First car? Cool.
My first car I bought with my own money was an LT1 Z28. Still have it. And while still in school, the monthly payment + $200 a month insurance premium for a teenager was hard on my wallet, I wouldnt trade it for the world.
It did teach me how to manage my money.
Good luck.

I only want the V8 sound, given in the cheaper, more manageable, more frugal R/T. As long as it's not too slow, I'm fine

(i'd love to own an SRT8 , sadly too expensive once shipped to Oz then converted to RHD)

No, but I've driven them. Of the three (Camaro, Mustang, Challenger) I like the Challenger best. Not sure why though, it just is more fun in my opinion. I'd get the R/T too if it was me (that's a lie, I'd get a classic one.) I'm not sure it would make a good first car, it's very easy to get into more trouble the electronic nannies can save you from. The V-6 version might be more manageable.
I think 20,000 is too much to be spending on a first car. My philosophy is that you should get some experience driving on your own and maintaining a car (do as much work yourself as you can.) That way you can come back in a year or so with a better idea of what you want, what you can live with (and without,) and how service should be done (so you don't get screwed by garages if nothing else.)

I completely agree with you.
