I have a Cerwin Vega HT-12 Subwoofer that doesn't work. The light comes on, and there is a slight buzz. But there is no sound. Ideas?

Is it air suspension? My idea is that it's just worn out.

Smack it with a hammer a couple times.

LOL. Don't scare me. I have a LX470 with adjustable suspension, just waiting for the day it goes out.

Is there a ground lift?

So, it's either the built-in amp or it's the driver. I wish the light was more revelatory, but there we are.

If it's the driver, you may be able to recone it (the most likely culprit is a burned voice coil), or you may just want to swap drivers. To test the driver, you'll have to unscrew it from the box (remember to unplug, etc.) and gently(!) remove the leads which are attached. Then, take a AA battery (just one!) and a couple short pieces of wire. Tape one wire to each end of the battery, hold one to a terminal and tap the other terminal with the other. If the speaker responds, it may not be dead. If you get nothing, or it scratches badly (it will sound scratchy, since you are essentially feeding a square-wave signal to it), the coil may be bad.

If the speaker is good, then you have to look to the amp. Check for a fuse pot, and if you find one, check the fuse. But, buzzing suggests something else has gone. If you can unscrew the amp from the box, you might see an obviously burned bit (if a component failed spectacularly) on there.

Sadly, the cost of replacing one component may be more than the value of the subwoofer. But, don't forget to check signal cables and other simple stuff first. Good luck!

I think that this is really good advice. I will be sure to check his first thing in the morning. Sadly I do think that the amp has failed, the fuse looks to be good. I think that the speaker is good too. I don't have a driver larger than 6" to test the amp. But is there a way to bypass the amp? It is a powered subwoofer.

If you really like it, you can get another subwoofer amplifier. See: https://www.parts-express.com/cat/subwoofer-…

You can bypass the amplifier, and wire up terminals directly to the driver, but you are going to need something to amplify that channel, as most receivers send subwoofer output as line-level output.

Also: you may be able to get the amp repaired. If it failed without a cloud of smoke, it might be failed capacitors, or another component.

I was going to suggest this. Nice.

Once you get the amp, just disconnect everything on the old one and remove it. Then stomp on it. Then reconnect everything on the new amp. There will be directions online somewhere.

Also very good information. I just bought the subwoofer for 5 dollars. I knew that it was broken, but now I'm trying to fix it. I'm not sure I like it enough to get another amplifier, but part-express is literally 5 min from my house.

The sub does have the option for speaker-level output, but it is integrated into the amp plate. And if the amp is fried I'm not sure I will be able to do that.

I guess now I have a really big magnet and an acoustically engineered coffee table.

this is the manual. http://www.cerwinvega.com/manuals/home/C…

Speaker level output on those amps usually is attenuated, put through a low-pass filter, and then the result is amplified for the subwoofer. Sadly, that won't help here.
