So, I just drove a Dodge Caliber... in stick! Around the block... I only stalled it 3 times lol (each stall occurring while trying to get it moving from a stop into first). I also sat in my driveway for a bit and just rolled the car forward and reverse using only the clutch. Super fun (wait, WAIT! Did I just have fun in a Caliber, WTF?)!

I get a chance to drive stick like once a year if I'm lucky, but I'm starting to get a feel for how it works (on top of all the research and video game time that I've spent lol). I'm just trying to get as much seat time in a manual car because I want to be comfortable enough to buy my next car in stick.

If you buy your next car in stick, you'll get the hang of it in a week. There's nothing like integrating a stick shift into your daily driving routine that forces you to learn it quickly. Keep up the good work!

Thanks! I'm really excited to throw a stick shift into my daily drive, just makes things so much more interesting.

I learned in a parking lot about 3 years before I bought a car with stick. Driving off the lot into rush hour traffic was definitely one of the most nerve wracking moments in my driving career. But I agree. Daily driving a stick definitely accelerates (:P) learning.

Just keep wanting to improve. Don't think the way you drive is good enough. I have a few friends who drive stick like they just learned yesterday.

I'm really excited about the whole thing, not to mention getting to continually improve as time goes on, rev matching, heel-toeing etc. This is the start of an excellent relationship between man and machine :) Now if I can just decide what machine I want to start my journey with, I'll be good.

Driving into rush hour must have been nuts lol; I started in my driveway, then mustered up the courage to take it around the block, then came the next challenge, moving over into third and then I accidentally was in fifth lol. I must have been smiling ear to ear.

Savor this point in your life. Seriously. Learning to drive stick is one of the best times you'll ever have in your automotive-loving life. Do it as often as you can and in as many different cars as you can.

Have fun :)

I definitely enjoy it. Even on my daily commute in traffic. My slow Kia lets me high rev it in 1st between starts and stops. Or if the speed is just right I can creep along in 2nd. Having control is a wonderful thing sometimes.

I hope you destroyed that clutch. Not because it's your first time, but because that is literally the worst piece of shit built in the 2000's. I would rather fuck a pile of old grocery bags than drive that car ever again.

Yes!!! This, the jitters and nervousness of learning something new and getting better and so on is one of the best parts of being a new driver/rider or being noew to driving a stick...

It's very different, but after a short drive I was used to it. It is pretty scary when I was approaching a corner and I wanted to push the clutch down, but instead I was mashing the big brake pedal or the floor..
