Let's say I'm really good at doing donuts and such, not so at going in a straight line. Also I really want to get a car here in New Zealand, to be free of going wherever I want on weekends. So much stuff to see!

Are you still over near Waiheke, or back on the mainland? If your near the North Shore of Auckland I can keep an eye out for some cheap cars if you want, or if you just want help understanding all the random JDM imports let me know

I'm living in Auckland, I'm flat sharing over on Anzac Av. So I have to compute in the price of the car the fact that I will have to pay for a parking spot every month (though I might be able to get a student discount), I don't know how insurance work s here either, nor the inspection or everything else required to register a car. And since I'll probably leave New Zealand at the end of the year (I hope not, I want to find work here), I don't want to pour money in it.
And I'll only use it from time to time to get out of the city, or during semester breaks. What I would love to find is something that's realiable, cheap, that can seat a few people and fun to drive (and I'm looking for manuals too). From what I've been seeing on Trade Me, cars are not that expensive over here.

Ooo, yea, getting a park around theres gonna be a problem. Maybe park it out of town near the Citylink bus network and commute to it :p
Cars are pretty cheap, though due to the amount of imports we get theyre kinda seen as disposable and so often arent looked after very well, so the cheaper end can be a bit hit and miss, so make sure you inspect well and you can find a gem.
Insurance is completely optional, but recommended as its also rather cheap (im paying about $350 a year fully comprehensive for my Legacy GT) Inspection is called the WOF and is every six months, Costs about $50, and don't buy a car without one. One from VTNZ is seen as better as theyre usually more rigorous. Cars must also be registered, but you can register it for anywhere from a month to a year. My spare daily (1500cc Nissan wagon) costs about $75 for 3 months.
If you want a manual your gonna be looking at something with sporting potential as normal cars are generally auto (thanks JDM....) A AE101 Corolla Levin or Trueno would be a popular option. Another option is backpacker buy back cars. Normally older wagons that are cheap, that when it comes to leave the country the seller buys back off your at a reduced rate.

So yea, if you can find somewhere to park it, do it. Theres great places to see, and a car is the best way!

Thanks for all the info! I can't believe how cheap insurance is. Back in France I pay around €650 a year for my car (Citroën Xsara).
As for parkings I think I might be able to find one for around $70 a week or less. Britomart's longterm parking is $315 a month. So if I can get a student discount (Wilson does it apparently) I might be able to get something a bit cheaper.
I've seen this Impreza Wagon on Trade Me which looks nice. Anyway if I do purchase a car, I'll definitely do a pre-purchase inspection.
Once again, thanks for all the WONDERFUL advices!

I spent 3 weeks in NZ (based out Napier-but was down as far Palmerston North + up to Gisborne + out to Taupo). Spent a Sunday walking+ bussing around Auck waiting for a flight out. Hate to say it was the only time I was dissappointed with NZ. -Yea—you HAVE to get out of the city. So much more to see -way more layed back.
