Recently, I've noticed an odd trend in luxury car design, and I'm not sure even what to call it. Things like the BMW 6-series Gran Coupe, which is the four-door version of their 2-door version of their 4-door version.
Likewise, the recently announced G500 4x4^2(don't judge me I just struggled with formatting for roughly 15 minutes before doing this instead) is a similarly silly 4-wheeled version of a 6-wheeled variant of a 4-wheeled vehicle.
It's not that I dislike these cars- I find both of them vastly interesting and amazing in their own ways. However, their nomenclature makes no sense. It's like saying this car isn't a wagon, it's a sedan, but its based off of the wagon version of the sedan we make. Track-variants of the top-end sport-luxury cars are similar in theory: Take a slow, pedestrian car, then make a hotter, more luxurious version, but then but make it less comfortable, less livable, and don't give it door handles. However, this makes sense for performance (BMW M3 GTS for example.) Can anyone comprehend this madness? Or have other examples of it?

Mercedes just wanted to make an extreme off-road version of the G wagon. BMW, on the other hand, is going psycho. If you want to start making the 3-series coupe as its own model, then fine. But if you're going to build four-door versions of the two-door version of a four-door car, then I don't know what to tell you.

It's because the product development heads at the German automakers can't get an erection unless they come up with a new niche model.

Agreed, BMW is going mad. But the naming scheme used for the new extreme offroader Mercedes dreamed up is confusing as well, especially to the uninitiated.

I hear Viagra can help with that. Although they'd probably take that, something to make their erection subside, and Viagra again just to contradict themselves and confuse their lovers.

Audi did it first and no one gave them shit.
In theory the 4 & 6 GC's make no sense …. but in practice …..

Yeah, you just wait until they make an M4 GC.

On release of the 4GC, they said there would be no such M4GC. Have you heard anything otherwise? Not saying that they shouldn't (oh they should, damnit), but I had heard otherwise.

I know, I was trying to make a point.
They say the next 8-series will be based on the Rolls Royce Ghost, which is based on the 7-series.
And then the 9-series will be a two-door 8-series.
And then the 9-series GC will be a four-door version of the two-door version of a four-door car.

Just a point of clarification: The 6GC is a 4 door based on a 2 door which is based on the platform of a 4 door. Not the other way around. And I'm not sure the F11 wagon platform is the same as the 6GC.

Never let the facts stand in the way of a good debate, I always say!

All this reminds me of the Japanese market, where automakers each sell five different mid-sized sedans in parallel to eachother... So Japan really is ahead of the rest of the world.
Guess we better get ready for host/hostess clubs and used panty vending machines.
